I never purport to be a master of X's and O's, or a basketball genius who should coach, general manage, or otherwise be commissioned with steering a team to victory. Thus, I try and shy away from unequivocal pronouncements like "so and so is a bum" or "trade him now." That said, I'm finding it a little hard to keep ignoring Erik Spoelstra simply because he's the least famous element in the Miami equation.LeBron James and Dwyane Wade as selfish divas? If you want to think that, fine. Chris Bosh, overrated softie? He's not exactly locking down the paint, but was that ever his game? Pat Riley, conniving mastermind who assembled this super-team with no regard for human life? I am unclear why that makes him a bad person.
The very small, very quiet, cog at the center of it all isn't of the max-contract players, or Riley's lust for power. It's not even Carlos Arroyo's ineffectual point guard returns. Erik Spoelstra has been handed two players who, when on non-teams by themselves, were capable of creating or scoring at will, and pushing their teams far further than anyone expected. Bosh, a perennial All-Star and versatile power forward, was considered the third-most prized free agent last summer. Riley pulled off a freaking coup by getting this group together.
