LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Red Sox had to work overtime, but Adrian Gonzalez finally is in the fold.Boston has completed a trade with the Padres for the All-Star first baseman. The team has scheduled a press conference to announce the deal on Monday morning at Fenway Park.
SI.com was first to report news of a second agreement.
Several hours earlier, word emerged that Gonzalez and the Red Sox were unable to come to a resolution on a long-term deal during a negotiating window provided by MLB. More importantly, perhaps, from the Red Sox perspective, the Nationals swooped in the meantime to land free agent Jayson Werth -- taking one potential impact bat out of play for Boston.

Sources told FanHouse's Steve Phillips that the Red Sox offered a six-year deal with an average annual value of $21 million a season. Gonzalez countered by asking for a contract in the same realm as Mark Teixeira (eight years, $22.5 million per year) and Ryan Howard (five years, $25 million per year), creating an impasse between the two sides.
