Brady evasive on reports that he's close to new deal with Pats
Tom Brady admitted he's "pretty uncomfortable" addressing reports that he and the New England Patriots are close to an agreement on a contract extension, adding it would be "selfish" for him to discuss it with the season opener looming. "I'm preparing to go out here and have a good weekend," Brady said Wednesday on WEEI-AM's The Dennis & Callahan Morning Show. "Nothing else matters to me. ... That's the God's honest truth."
But for Patriots fans worried that he will leave after this season, Brady had a message: "My home's in Boston." Brady made his comments one day after the Boston Herald cited sources close to the negotiations in reporting that the quarterback had been offered a three-year, $58 million contract extension. The newspaper said the deal with Brady was "imminent" and could be reached by Wednesday morning. WEEI also reported Tuesday that "tremendous progress" had been made in negotiations and the deal was close to completion, according to sources. Brady is entering the final year of his current contract, which will pay him $6.5 million this season, and the extension reportedly will begin after that. But Brady said Wednesday that he's concentrating on Sunday's season opener against the CincinnatiBengals and hinted that Patriots owner Bob Kraft and coach Bill Belichick probably wouldn't be happy if he discussed his contract. Brady did discuss Randy Moss' situation, which came to the forefront Monday after the wide receiver said he didn't feel wanted by the Patriots entering the final year of his deal.
For his part, Brady would like Moss, one of his favorite target, to stay in New England. "I would love that. (But) it's not my decision," Brady said. "This is something that's out of other players' control. Randy is important, was important and will be important. ... I love Randy and would love to play with him for a long time." But, Brady later acknowledged, "Sometimes the football side of things doesn't always mesh with the business side of things." Brady, an 11-year NFL veteran, has led the Patriots to three Super Bowl championships. Brady also is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and was the 2007 NFL Most Valuable Player.
