NEW YORK - Patrick McEnroe quit Monday as the U.S. Davis Cup team captain, and that means they're going to have to find someone else who can do whatever it is that a Davis Cup captain actually does.
It's tough to know what the job duties are exactly. Suffer big egos, kiss up to top players. Beg them to play for their country. Shake hands. Deal with headaches.
Definitely that last one.
The early front-runners for the job are former players Jim Courier and Todd Martin. My preference is a risky one: Brad Gilbert. But I'll get back to that in a minute.
Let's talk about McEnroe. Or, McEnroes.
The funny thing is that even though I'm not sure how much a Davis Cup captain actually does, I do know that McEnroe did it very well. Certainly 100 times better than his predecessor and brother, John McEnroe.
McEnroe - Patrick, not John - had the perfect demeanor for the job. He's willing to play second-fiddle, and he's willing to suspend his own ego for another cause. He's willing to work his butt off on the little things that aren't directly about him.
He has done those things his whole life. Does any of that apply to John McEnroe?
Ha!
