Jabar Gaffney, a fellow Broncos wide receiver, sold the weapon to McKinley several months beforehand, sheriff's investigators said in the report. Sheriff Grayson Robinson told the AP that there was nothing improper about the private sale of the gun between individuals.
According to the report, McKinley had brought up the possibility of committing suicide with at least three of his friends. One of those friends was former Broncos backup quarterback Tom Brandstater, who also told investigators that he had loaned McKinley $65,000 and that McKinley owed $40,000 in gambling losses to Las Vegas casinos.
