ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) -- Cerro Porteno of Paraguay, Argentina's Velez Sarsfield and Chiapas of Mexico completed the lineup for the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals on Thursday.
Cerro beat Estudiantes of Argentina on penalties after two scoreless draws, Velez thrashed Ecuador's Liga de Quito 5-0 on aggregate and Chiapas staged a late revival to claim a 3-3 draw and progress on away goals against Colombia's Atletico Junior.
The three clubs join Brazil's Santos, Uruguay's Penarol, Paraguay's Libertad, Chile's Universidad Catolica and Colombia's Once Caldas in the last eight of Latin America's top international club competition.
Both legs of the tie between Cerro and Estudiantes finished scoreless to take the second match straight to penalties. Extra time is not played in the Copa Libertadores.
After seven successful kicks, Facundo Roncaglia had his effort saved by Cerro goalkeeper Diego Barreto and Javier Villarreal smashed his penalty into the roof of the net to put the home side through.
"I'm very happy for all the fans that came here to watch us tonight, we've made the quarterfinals and we are very content," said Barreto.
Just before Roncaglia's failure, Cerro's Luis Caceres had his first kick saved by Agustin Orion but scored at the second attempt after the officials decided the Estudiantes goalkeeper had moved off his line too early.
"I saw the linesman raise his flag and luckily he (Caceres) was able to put the second one in," Barreto said.
The elimination of Estudiantes, winners of the Libertadores in 2009, comes as a surprise and leaves Velez Sarsfield as the only Argentine club left in the competition.
Velez cruised past Liga with a 2-0 win, adding to a 3-0 victory in the first leg. Ricardo Alvarez and Ivan Bella scored the goals in a match suspended for 17 minutes in the first half because of a floodlight failure.
Elsewhere, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Junior took the lead three times against Chiapas with goals from Juan Valencia, Luis Paez' penalty and Carlos Bacca but failed to hold on each time.
Jackson Martinez scored the first two equalizers and was then sent off alongside Junior's Cesar Fawcett in the 79th minute with the score at 3-2.
Edgar Andrade then popped up with a third equalizer for Chiapas in the 87th minute to squeeze the Mexican club into the quarters on away goals.
Estudiantes' unexpected elimination follows a day of surprise results Wednesday, when all four Brazilian clubs lost.
Penarol beat defending champion Internacional, Libertad knocked out Fluminense, Universidad Catolica eliminated Gremio and Once Caldas won against Cruzeiro.
The results meant Santos will be Brazil's sole survivor in the last eight. Santos completed a 1-0 aggregate win over Mexico's America on Tuesday.
The raft of eliminations leaves the Libertadores wide open. In the last six years, Brazil has supplied eight finalists and three winners. Santos' last victory in the continental tournament was in 1963 when Pele led the team to success.
As well as Estudiantes in 2009, Boca Juniors won the cup for Argentina in 2007.
Ecuador's Liga de Quito?also now out of the competition?is the only team outside the two traditional South American powerhouses to win the tournament in the past six years.
The quarterfinals lineup will be Once Caldas vs. Santos, Velez vs. Libertad, Penarol vs. Catolica, and Chiapas vs. Cerro Porteno.
