Report: Chris Johnson, Titans agree to $53.5 million deal

After a 35-day holdout, Chris Johnson and the Titans agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $53.5 million, according to The (Nashville) Tennessean.

The deal is worth $30 million guaranteed, reports Jim Wyatt. The team has confirmed a four-year extension.

Johnson, the NFL's rushing leader over the past three seasons combined (4,598 yards), was scheduled to make $1.065 million in the first of two remaining years on his deal. A $9.21 million average salary over six years would make him the second-highest-paid RB behind Minnesota's Adrian Peterson ($10.7 million). Further details of the deal were not available Thursday.

Johnson's $30 million guarantee is unprecedented for his position. Last month, the Panthers reached a deal with RB DeAngelo Williams that gave him $21 million in guaranteed money.

Thursday afternoon, Johnson tweeted a promotional flyer for his brother's birthday celebration at an Orlando nightclub, boasting a planned appearance by Johnson himself. The night's theme: "PAINT THE CITY GREEN"

Negotiations between the Titans and Johnson appeared strained last week after contracts talks in Nashville. Johnson said the two sides didn't see "eye to eye" after he and his agent, Joel Segal, met with Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt.

On Wednesday, however, The Tennessean reported a breakthrough in negotiations. Johnson now has 10 days until the Sept. 11 season opener to acclimate himself with new Titans head coach Mike Munchak and new QB Matt Hasselbeck.

Johnson lashed out this week against those critical of him on Twitter, calling them 'fake Titan fans'.

As reaction pours in from Johnson's NFL peers, The Huddle couldn't pass up this classic tweet from Redskins WR Donte Stallworth, who references the 1988 film Coming to America:

"When I say the boy's got his own money, THE BOY'S GOT HIS OWN MONEY!!!"
