MLB Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

Filed under: MLB Trade Deadline, Advanced Scouting

In past years, bigger names have moved at the deadline, but this year will be remembered as a very busy one. Some names like Roy Oswalt, Lance Berkman and Ted Lilly found new homes and many solid prospects were on the move. In sports, it's all about winning and losing, and the deadline is no different.

This year, many of the teams we call "sellers" came out as winners, and some teams that were clear buyers came out as losers. So in the end, who came out on top at this year's trade deadline and who came away disappointed?

We've got all the answers below:Braves Indians Phillies Tigers

Lorenzen Wright Died of Gunshot Wound, Ruled Homicide

Filed under: NBA Police BlotterFormer NBA and University of Memphis player Lorenzen Wright died as a result of a gunshot wound and police were drawn to the area where his body was found by a 911 call placed more than a week before it was discovered, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement released on Thursday.

The discovery of the body was part of coordinated -- albeit delayed -- effort by a handful of law enforcement agencies who gathered Wednesday morning, hours before their search uncovered Wright's remains.

"Through identification of dental records, the Shelby County Medical Examiner has officially identified the victim as that of Lorenzen Wright," Police Department lieutenant Alan Ruhl said in the news release. "The cause of death has been ruled as homicide by gunshot wound."

The release was the first in which authorities identified Wright, 34, as the body found in southeast Memphis Wednesday afternoon.

Wright was last seen by his ex-wife shortly before midnight on July 18, and family members filed a missing persons report on July 22. Police reportedly didn't originally suspect foul play until a 911 call taken by Germantown, Tenn., dispatcher during the early morning hours of July 19 -- when several gunshots could be heard -- was linked to Wright's cell phone.Indians Phillies Tigers Astros

Teams Scramble to Get No. 1 Picks Signed and in Camp

Filed under: NFL Training CampAs expected, Oakland's signing of Rolando McClain on Thursday started the first-round dominoes falling, as teams scrambled to get their top picks signed for the start of their respective training camps.

Four of the five offensive lineman selected in April's draft signed Friday, highlighted by fourth overall selection Trent Williams, who became the highest pick to put his name on an NFL contract

Here's a closer look at the day of deals:

o. The Redskins and Williams agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract. Williams, whose contract includes $36.75 in guaranteed money, was in uniform for Friday's practice, which bodes well for the Redskins, who expect the 6-4, 315-pound former Oklahoma All-American to start at left tackle right away.Phil Jackson Charles Woodson Shaq Derek Jeter

LeBron James Should Stop Trying to Be Like Mike

King James is Air Jordan, and Air Jordan was King James, but not in the way that you think.

Here's how you should think: Deception.

More specifically, you should think the fine art of deception. Which, if you believe the Scriptures, always leads to the perpetrator getting exposed at some point with a heavy dose of ugliness.

Exhibit A: Most of the universe didn't know Michael Jordan's public image was a fraud until years after his second Three-Peat with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. The truth dribbled into view -- somewhere between his $168 million divorce settlement and the insufferable (or shall we say insulting?) speech he delivered last year during his induction ceremony into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

No question, much about Jordan was well-crafted fantasy. The lovable superstar no matter what. The everyman with the perfect family. The African-American version of Ed McMahon who wasn't so much into pocketing millions, but who just wanted everybody to have a good pair of underwear and some nice-fitting sneakers.

There is a difference between King James and Air Jordan, though, and it's actually huge. Jordan's image went unblemished on and off the court throughout his playing career. LeBron James continues to dribble with authority in his prime, but when it comes to that self-proclaimed King James, he already is an emperor with no clothes.

Speaking of nakedness, the lengthy campaign by James and his handlers to make King James the next Air Jordan (without the baggage) has flopped, because it suddenly is bare of substance and credibility.Yankees Angels Cubs White Sox

ESPN Says Story on LeBron James' Las Vegas Exploits Will Not Run

Filed under: Heat, NBA Free AgentsA story on the doings of LeBron James while he and other NBA players were in Las Vegas last weekend will not run on ESPN.com because the reporter did not identify himself as a reporter, an ESPN executive said Thursday.

Rob King, vice president and editor in chief of ESPN Digital Media, said in a statement issued by the company that Arash Markazi, a Los Angeles-based columnist, did not "properly identify himself as a reporter or clearly state his intentions to write a story."

"As a result, we are not comfortable with the content, even in an edited version, because of the manner in which the story was reported," King said in the statement.

King stressed that the piece, which detailed a weekend where James, his personal friends and marketing partners, as well as Nike employees and other NBA players, were served champagne by flying waiters and partied around go-go dancers and scantily clad women, was not quashed at the behest of James or other outside sources.

Eddie House Agrees to Contract With Miami Heat

Veteran guard Eddie House has agreed to terms on a two-year contract worth $2.8 million. The second year of the deal comes with a player's option.

This marks a return engagement for House with the Heat. He was their second-round draft pick in 2000 and played in Miami for three seasons.

Andy Murray Must Blame Himself, Not Coaches

If I have it right, the way Andy Murray tells the story, he was spending too much time alone with Coach Brad Gilbert, making the relationship uncomfortable. So he fired Gilbert to take up a team of coaches.

Now, the team concept is uncomfortable, so he fired Miles Maclagan this week, and will begin looking for a new coach.

What does he look for now? Murray just keeps adding every day to the evidence that he's a head case.

He keeps firing coaches even though he now has tremendous fitness, footwork and stamina (thanks to Gilbert) and also athleticism, strokes, size, strength, intelligence and work ethic.

The problem with Andy Murray is not coming from the outside. It's the special thing missing between a great player and a champion. Murray hasn't found it yet, and might not even have it.

When Murray wakes up in the morning and looks in the mirror, he doesn't see a champion. So he tries a new coach.Tony Schumacher Roger Federer Shaun White Snowboard

Goal Differential: What the Non-Playoff Teams Must Do

Filed under: Blue Jackets, Blues, Ducks, Flames, Hurricanes, Islanders, Lightning, Maple Leafs, Oilers, Panthers, Rangers, Stars, Thrashers, Wild, NHL PlayoffsAround this time last year I looked at what the non-playoff teams needed to do in terms of their goal differential to have a shot at qualifying for the postseason. As it turns out, six of the teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs the year before ended up improving enough to make it this season (Ottawa, Nashville, Colorado, Phoenix, Buffalo and Los Angeles).

Why does goal differential matter? The obvious answer: good teams outscore their opponents, and great teams outscore their opponents by a lot.

Of the 160 playoff teams since the 1999-00 season, only 12 have finished the regular season with a negative differential, and only three have been worse than minus-10. The magic number over that time period to get into the playoffs has been right around plus-20. Of the 102 teams that have finished with such a mark, 100 of them (98 percent) have qualified for the postseason.

Here's a look at how much improvement last year's non-playoff teams need to reach the magic number of plus-20.Panthers Texans Cowboys

Dez Bryant Just Another Cowboys Diva

Filed under: Cowboys, NFL Training CampThanks now to Dez Bryant, LeBron James isn't the most me-bloated, self-sniffing rebel without a pause button on the planet. See, Roy Williams told Dez to carry his shoulder pads like a good rookie, and Dez told him to get his own shine box because Dez doesn't play that.

Even though his well-accomplished number-sake did. And from first-rounders to free-agent camp bodies throughout the history of the league, just about everyone else did when they were a rookie. Because there's a lesson in it about humility. Because no matter how swoll your bankroll or swagger rating on "Madden '11", you need to earn respect in the room. Because the sum of the room wins in football.

And while Dez has declared much through a couple days in San Antonio, impressing the eyes with a series of one-handed snares and deep grabs, the Cowboys will only win in a house not divided. So while it's news that Dez dons Michael Irving's jersey, the voices in that locker room had better make sure now that it doesn't say H1N1 on the back instead of 88.

Romo better order a Code Red.

And blame it on the ghost of Terrell Owens.

Scott Dixon Wins Edmonton as Helio Goes Berserk Over Penalty

Filed under: IRLEDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Scott Dixon won a controversial Honda Edmonton Indy on Sunday after Helio Castroneves crossed the finish line first, but was penalized for blocking his teammate.

An enraged Castroneves, who ended up 10th, stormed from his car after the race to yell at IndyCar officials and grabbed Indy Racing League security chief Charles Burns by the lapels of his shirt, shaking him.

After cooling down somewhat, Castroneves told a TV interviewer, "I have nothing smart to say. The only thing I can say is talk to my attorneys."

Castroneves took the lead from Team Penske teammate and pole winner Will Power with 18 laps to go in the 95-lap race, but was called for blocking Power when Power tried to pass him on a restart with two laps to go.

With Power blocked by Castroneves, Dixon stormed past him to take second place as they charged toward the finish line.

But the flagman showed Castroneves the black flag, while Dixon received the checkered flag. Power was second, followed by Dario Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

It was Dixon's second victory of the season, but he won this one without ever being the lead car.

"Pretty strange to not run a lap and actually win the race," Dixon said. "But rules are rules, man. It was obvious Will had a pretty good run. The only way to stop him was blocking."Kyle Busch Dario Franchitti Ron Hornaday Tony Schumacher

Lance Armstrong Rides Into the Darkness at the Tour de France

PARIS -- To the end, the bitter and cryptic end, there was fuss and controversy, a cause celebre. Maybe it wasn't the time and place for a tribute to cancer patients worldwide, but as a survivor of the disease and a crusader against it, Lance Armstrong thought it was. And considering this was designed as a symbolic moment at the starting line of his final Tour de France, the event he defined as much as it defined him, then why the hell not?

So in the far southern suburb of Longjumeau, Armstrong and his Radio Shack teammates replaced their red-and-gray racing shirts with black jerseys -- each with a yellow 28 stenciled on the back. "Today, we're riding for every one of the 28 million people all over the world whose lives and families are affected by this disease,'' he said. It would have been a nice touch for Tour officials to let them compete one time with the black shirts, but the gentlemen who operate the race can be stuffy and curmudgeonly, and they sent urgent word to Armstrong: Wear the official shirts or risk a team disqualification, which is not how the legend would want to depart the Tour forever, especially with a explosive doping investigation awaiting him in the U.S.
tweetcount_src = 'RT @FanHouse:'; tweetcount_via = false; tweetcount_size = 'small'; tweetcount_background = 'FFFFFF'; tweetcount_border = 'CCCCCC'; tweetcount_api_key = '1cf4e3b7f7f20406a9dd9d1b1edc0e41b4fc20d1b21cb19a6f169387c696d333';

The start of the final stage was delayed 15 minutes. And some will say Armstrong tried to upstage the new king of cycling, Spain's Alberto Contador, who has won three of the last four Tours and might threaten Armstrong's record of seven titles. But eventually, the International Cycling Union allowed Lance and his mates to wear the black shirts on the Paris podium after Radio Shack won the team competition. As all the attention rightfully deflected to Contador, Armstrong didn't have deep thoughts.Snowboard Bobby Brown Freestyle Skiing Ryan Dungey

Kevin Durant Dazzles, Tough Cuts Loom for Team USA Basketball

Kevin Durant won the player of the game award in the USA Basketball Showcase.

LAS VEGAS -- If Andre Iguodala had returned a compliment to coach Mike Krzyzewski, perhaps he really would be a lock for Team USA.

Then again, it looks as if the Philadelphia swingman is a lock anyhow. His stellar play in the USA Basketball Showcase at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday night caused the Team USA coach to get a bit giddy after the White beat the Blue 114-96 in the intrasquad game that concluded a five-day training camp.

"Andre just had a great week,'' Krzyzewski said of his play on the team preparing for next month's World Championship in Turkey. "I told him right after (Saturday's) game out on the court I thought he was beautifully efficient. I'm not sure anybody's called him beautiful. I know nobody has ever called me beautiful. So I was looking actually for a return on him, saying, 'Coach, you look beautiful.' ... Andre, he can defend. You need guys out there who don't have to touch the ball. ... (Iguodala is) one of the key guys for our basketball team.''

Iguodala's filling up of the box score was indeed a thing of beauty for the White. He shot 5 of 6 from the field and totaled 17 points, six rebounds and five assists in 24 minutes.

Yes, the leading scorer for the White and for the game was Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant, who had 28 points. But Durant, named the game's Most Valuable Player, already was a lock for the team regardless of whether he returns compliments to Krzyzewski.Athletics Ernie Els Tiger Woods Graeme McDowell

Source: Report of Rams seriously pursuing T.O. 'overzealous'

Several NFL teams, including the St. Louis Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, have maintained contact with free-agent wide receiver Terrell Owens this offseason. However, a Rams source scoffed at a Saturday report that the team was in serious pursuit of Owens or aggressively courting him, calling it "overzealous." Also, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was dismissive of the idea of signing Owens during a Tuesday interview with the team's official Web site. Said Lewis: "We've been down that road. I don't have a concern that we need to add anybody (at receiver)." Owens has made no secret of his desire to join Chad Ochocinco in Cincinnati and visited the Bengals early in the offseason, but they haven't offered a deal that has gotten his attention. Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, also said Friday that a report the receiver would sign with the Bengals and a deal was imminent was "not true." The reality is any team that truly wanted Owens could make a substantial offer and expedite a move. And at this stage in free agency -- six months into the process for a healthy player such as Owens -- there isn't a whole lot of courting and pursuing that needs to be done. Rosenhaus sent out communications to all NFL teams throughout the offseason, letting them know the general salary parameters that his clients, including Owens, are seeking. Furthermore, Owens is trying to catch on with a contender if at all possible, and teams such as the Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- who could use him -- don't meet that criteria. It's also unlikely that those teams would make a substantial financial contribution for a 36-year-old player who in essence would be a one-year rental.

"It has to be the right situation for me," Owens told NFL Network's Stacey Dales on Friday. "I'm going in on my 15th season, so I want to go to a team that's on the cusp of making it to the playoffs and really having a team really want me and feel that I can come in and be an asset to their ballclub. Other than that, I'm still working out and keeping myself in shape, and I'll be ready." Still, it would be stunning if Owens isn't signed at some point during training camp and the preseason. Rosenhaus has said he anticipates a deal in the coming week or weeks. 76ers Celtics Heat Pistons

Austin says he's same guy despite fast rise to Cowboys stardom

SAN ANTONIO -- Miles Austin insists he's the same as always, despite his quick rise from relative unknown to Pro Bowl receiver, the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated and Kim Kardashian companion. "I've been doing the same things. It's just that more people are paying attention now," Austin said Sunday, trying to convince reporters and cameras surrounding him that he feels no different from when people didn't even notice him less than a year ago. "I've got the star on my helmet. But that's about it." Yet, Austin no longer comes on the field at Dallas Cowboys training camp without fanfare. There are plenty of cheers when he emerges from the tunnel and catches passes from Tony Romo. The New Jersey native is recognized in public now and certainly is photographed when he keeps certain company -- though Austin and Kardashian, the reality TV star who is New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush's former girlfriend, are coy about whether they are actually dating. "It's like taking somebody working at The Container Store in the closet and now he's the American Idol," Cowboys teammate Bradie James said of Austin. "That's only in America and only on America's Team that you can do that. ... Miles is still levelheaded. Miles is still the same guy. People like him now, more people." Entering his fifth NFL season, the former undrafted receiver from tiny Monmouth College is no longer primarily a kick returner who occasionally has a pass thrown his way. Austin has emerged as Romo's favorite target -- and a problem for defensive coordinators league-wide. Plus, he's in line for a big new contract. Austin signed a one-year, $3.168 million tender in June, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones repeatedly has said the team wants to sign the receiver to a long-term deal. So much has changed since Austin, filling in for injured Roy Williams, made his first NFL start last October at Kansas City. Austin finished with 10 catches for 250 yards against the Chiefs to break the Cowboys' single-game yardage record, set by Hall of Fame receiver "Bullet Bob" Hayes in 1966. Austin also scored two late touchdowns, including a 60-yarder in overtime. It was quite a breakout performance for Austin, who entered the game with 23 career catches, including five in the first four games last season. Austin's encore was six catches for 171 yards and two more TDs in Dallas' next game. He went on to finish the season with 81 catches for 1,320 yards, sixth-best in team history and the sixth-best by any undrafted receiver in the NFL. "I pretty much have the same confidence (as before)," Austin said. "Don't get me wrong, I was getting more opportunities last year, and hopefully I'll get as many opportunities this year. Obviously other people are probably going to hold some sort of standard, but my standard really is just work."

Romo, another undrafted player from a small school and who knows something about NFL stardom and celebrity, agreed that Austin hasn't changed much. "Too much is made out of some of the other stuff that goes into it," Romo said. "The difference once you start playing and playing at a decent level is that people start talking about you. Miles has been doing the same things he was doing before. It's just now when people see him they take his picture or they write about it." Austin was a rookie when he started catching passes from Romo in 2006, even before the quarterback took over as the starter seven games into that season. Instead of extra reps on the practice field, Romo and Austin now are hooking up for real for the defending NFC East champions, who have Super Bowl expectations. Asked if it would be tough to repeat what they did last year, Austin responded, "No, not really" and quickly indicated he wasn't specifically talking about numbers. "Statistically, who knows what's going to happen. But I know my effort is going to be the same or higher," Austin said. "That's just what I plan on doing, working hard every day. I'm doing the same things. I'm not changing anything." Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press Dario Franchitti Ron Hornaday Tony Schumacher Roger Federer

Giants' Eugenio Velez Hit in Head by Foul Ball, Taken to Hospital

Filed under: Diamondbacks, GiantsPHOENIX (AP) -- Their teammate lying on the dugout floor, barely conscious and surrounded by trainers, the San Francisco Giants weren't thinking about moving runners, getting outs, even winning the game.

"A scary moment because it hit him good," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We were concerned about him."

Velez was injured in the fourth inning when a sharp liner by teammate Pat Burrell shot into the dugout. Unable to see the ball coming through the teammates standing in front of him, Velez couldn't react in time and was hit on the left side of the head.

Some teammates immediately gathered around, while others couldn't look. The trainers rushed over. Burrell took a few moments before returning to the batter's box. Even the opposing team cringed at seeing the fluke injury.touchdowns All Star allstar PGA

Steelers coach Tomlin signs extension through 2012, with option

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced Friday that they have signed coach Mike Tomlin to a two-year contract extension through the 2012 season, with an option for 2013. The extension was expected because the Steelers' policy has been to sign a coach before he begins the final season of a contract. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported last week that Tomlin had signed a three-year extension through the 2014 season, and a league source told NFL Network Jason La Canfora that the deal was worth $5 million per year.

Tomlin made $2.5 million per season under the contract he signed upon succeeding Bill Cowher in January 2007. Tomlin is only the Steelers' third coach since 1969, following Chuck Noll (1969-91) and Cowher (1992-2006). "I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers," Tomlin said in a statement released by the team. "I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh." Tomlin is 31-17 in three seasons, with two AFC North division titles, an AFC championship and a Super Bowl victory. During the 2008 season, he became the youngest coach -- he was 36 -- to win the Super Bowl when the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. "Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in the team's statement. "His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success." The Steelers were 9-7 and missed the playoffs this past season. They are scheduled to open training camp July 30 at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. The Associated Press contributed to this report. New England Saints Drew Brees Payton Manning

Alberto Contador Locks Up Tour de France Title in Next-to-Last Stage

Filed under: CyclingPAUILLAC, France (AP) -- Wiping away tears, Alberto Contador is ready for the champagne to flow.

After three daunting weeks of crashes, biting cold, fog and searing heat, he is set to become the Tour de France champion again.

The Spaniard all but captured his third title in four years Saturday by holding off a full-bore challenge from his main rival, Andy Schleck of Luxembourg, in a 32-mile individual time trial in the next-to-last stage. Sunday's ride into Paris is a mostly ceremonial affair.

"I am very moved ... It was a difficult Tour and I'm very happy," a tearful Contador said.

He took a deep breath and his hand trembled as he fired an index finger -- the trademark gesture by the rider nicknamed "El Pistolero" -- to fans after donning the yellow jersey one more time.

"I think it's the first Tour that has given me so much emotion, you can't imagine," he said.Surfer Garrett Reynolds BMX LeBron James

First-rounder Bryant signs five-year, $11.8M deal with Cowboys

IRVING, Texas -- With all the stories about Dez Bryant being a character risk, and then with him picking the same agent whom buddy Michael Crabtree had during a holdout that lasted nearly until Halloween last season, some Dallas Cowboys fans worried whether the rookie wide receiver would ever show up. Well, guess what: Bryant signed Thursday, becoming the first first-round draft pick in the entire NFL to strike a deal. The contract is for $11.8 million over five years, with at least $8.3 million guaranteed.

The key is that the deal is done in time for Bryant to be in San Antonio for the start of training camp Friday and, of course, the first practice Saturday. By the end of training camp, he might even be pushing Roy Williams for the starting job opposite Miles Austin. "This was very important to me to be able to get this done in time for the first practice," Bryant said in a statement released by the team. "I want to help this team. I want to compete. I can't wait to start playing football again." Bryant played just three games for Oklahoma State last season, then was dogged by all sorts of questions about his integrity, starting with an NCAA suspension for lying to investigators about a meeting with former Cowboys star Deion Sanders. There was talk of Bryant skipping meetings and classes and being late to games. There were concerns about his mother's private life, enough that Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland asked if she ever was a prostitute. After Bryant skipped the NFL Scouting Combine and held his own pro day, there were whispers that he forgot to bring the right cleats. But the Cowboys did their homework and wanted Bryant so badly that when they saw him slipping in the draft, they moved up to No. 24 and nabbed him. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also laid the foundation for Thursday's announcement before ever making the pick. Speaking with agent Eugene Parker while the Cowboys were on the clock, Jones said: "We want a commitment here that we're going to work to get this done. We don't want a repeat of what happened last year." That conversation was relayed by Stephen Jones, the team's vice president, while he repeatedly praised Parker and Bryant for sealing the deal on the eve of training camp. "It's always been a good relationship with (Parker)," Jones said Thursday, noting that the agent represented two other recent first-rounders, but leaving out the fact both were a few days late to camp. "It's a two-way street. He's benefited, we've benefited. Nobody is trying to get the upper hand. You just want things to be good. He wants things to be good for Dez, and so do we." Parker agreed that his long, solid relationship with the Joneses helped this deal come together. "The trust factor," he said. "That enabled us to cut through some of the typical posturing and positioning and get right to the issues." Among those issues was the lack of a collective bargaining agreement starting in 2011. That uncertainty is among the reasons that none of the other first-rounders have signed. "That's a big issue," Parker said. "Both sides had to be committed to compromise and be willing to see the other person's challenges and concerns and work through them." Jerry Jones already has given Bryant No. 88, a cherished jersey in Cowboys history because it was worn by Michael Irvin and Drew Pearson. Irvin was Troy Aikman's favorite target, and Pearson was Roger Staubach's favorite target. With this deal done, it won't be long before Tony Romo starts his relationship with Bryant, perhaps adding them to that list.

"It was really important that we get him working and in the groove with Tony and our offense, and I think he understood that," Stephen Jones said. Romo liked what he saw from Bryant over the summer -- and from what the kid did in college. In 27 games at Oklahoma State, Bryant had 147 catches for 2,425 yards (16.5 yards per catch) and 29 touchdowns. He also returned 22 punts for a 19.6-yard average and three TDs. Bryant already is being counted on to return punts for the Cowboys. On Friday, the Cowboys' official team Web site reported the team signed four draft picks: linebacker Sean Lee, the team?s second-round pick (55th overall) out of Penn State, safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, a fourth-round pick (126th overall) out of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, cornerback Jamar Wall, the team?s sixth-round choice (196th overall) from Texas Tech and supplemental draft seventh-round pick, nose tackle Josh Brent from Illinois.

He wants things to be good for Dez, and so do we." No Etiquette Breach for New King of Tour

Filed under: CyclingPARIS -- One day, his billowing resume is being celebrated by the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. The next, he is taking pictures on the podium with Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise, who are using the face of the Tour de France to help promote their critically savaged movie. "Of course, I've seen a lot of your films, but it's a little bit strange seeing you up close," he told the actors sheepishly, signing a yellow jersey for Diaz.

Did he fetch her phone number, by chance? "I didn't get that far," he said later, laughing.

His name, it should be noted, is not Lance Armstrong.

Rather, it is Alberto Contador, unequivocally the new king of cycling, who will clinch his third Tour victory in four years Sunday with a sip of champagne on the Champs-Elysees and, at 27, already is hearing questions about his own potential legacy in the sport. Kenyon Cotton, Former Baltimore Ravens RB, Dies at 36

Filed under: RavensKenyon Cotton, a former Baltimore Raven running back, died Friday following complications after surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon.

According to reports in the Minden (La.) Press-Herald, Cotton had outpatient surgery to repair a torn Achilles' last week.

Cotton reportedly suffered breathing complications after returning home from the procedure. As a result, he was admitted to a south Louisiana hospital and later placed into a medically induced coma in preparation to address his medical situation.

"From what I'm told, when he came out of the coma, he had a series of strokes back to back," Kenyon Allen, Cotton's younger cousin, told the paper. "He had been on life support the entire time he was in the hospital."

Allen said the percentage of dependency on the life support fluctuated. Following the series of strokes, Cotton became fully dependent on life support.

Cotton reportedly passed away Friday after being taken off life support.

"Kenyon was proof that you can be a great football player and you can also be a great person," said Steve Brasher, Minden High School Head Football Coach from 1983-1991.

Funeral services for Cotton will be held tomorrow in Minden.

David Kahn, Timberwolves Fined $50,000 for Michael Beasley Comments

Filed under: TimberwolvesMinnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn was fined $50,000 for inappropriate comments about forward Michael Beasley, the NBA announced Friday.

The league also fined the Timberwolves' organization $50,000.

In an interview with ESPN Radio in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Kahn said that Beasley had "smoked too much marijuana" while with the Miami Heat, who drafted the forward second overall in 2008, but has since quit.

FanHouse's Tom Ziller covered Kahn's comments in detail Thursday, pointing out that Article XXXIII, Section 3(f) of the league's collective bargaining agreement states that team employees are prohibited from disclosing "information regarding the use, possession, or distribution of a Prohibited Substance by a player."New England Saints Drew Brees Payton Manning

Shaq Wants to Wear Celtics Green

Filed under: Cavaliers, Celtics, NBA Free AgentsVeteran free agent center Shaquille O'Neal -- the future Hall of Famer without a team -- has been lobbying the Boston Celtics aggressively, still trying to convince them that his addition would help their quest to win another NBA championship.

He still wants to be The Big Leprechaun.

The Celtics, who lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals in June, are facing the difficult task of holding off both the suddenly star-studded Miami Heat and the improved Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference to get their rematch in the Finals.

Although O'Neal was unavailable for comment Friday, two sources close to him confirmed his continued interest in the Celtics, even though they currently have no room, or exceptions, under the salary cap to pay him beyond the NBA veteran's minimum of $1.35 million.

The Celtics could pay him more, but only if his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, helped with a sign-and-trade deal.Shaun Rogers Michael Vick Terrell Owens Buckeyes

Dwight Gooden Reportedly Deserts Family

Filed under: Mets, Yankees, AL East, NL EastDwight Gooden, the former New York Mets and Yankees star, has abandoned his family and turned into a deadbeat dad, says his wife, Monique, according to a New York Post report.

Monique Gooden told the paper she has not seen Gooden since June 22. She said the former ace, who has been plagued by substance abuse problems for decades, left the her and their children -- 5-year-old old son Dylan and 4-month-old daughter Milan -- surviving on public assistance and food stamps.

"He's left us with no money," Monique Gooden told the Post. "When I got here to Maryland, I had to go apply for social services, food stamps and health insurance for the kids. He has offered no financial assistance to us."

Monique Gooden says the 1984 National League Rookie of the Year had been holed up in a hotel somewhere in New Jersey back in May.

The couple wed in January 2009, but Monique claims they haven't lived together since May 1, according to the report.

"You know what, right now I'm so stressed, I've been so stressed that every day has been a struggle for me," she told the paper. "I just want support for the kids at this time . . . I just want to take care of them."Pirates Padres American League National League

Jets center Mangold says he won't miss camp over contract

Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold wants a new contract from the New York Jets. If that doesn't happen, though, he won't hold out from training camp in protest. "It doesn't seem to me to do any good to do it, so I'll be there with bells on," Mangold said Friday on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access." Mangold is entering the final year of a five-year, $7.47 million contract that he signed as a rookie in 2006. He hasn't missed a game since being the Jets' first-round draft pick that year, and he has been chosen to the past two Pro Bowls. "It's disappointing right now where we're at, but it's one of those things you go through," Mangold said. "I'm professional, I've done everything the right way, and I'm going to continue to do that -- be there for my teammates and the coaches. And we'll see how it all plays out." Jets veterans are scheduled to report to training camp Aug. 1 in Cortland, N.Y. One of them -- offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson -- will show up with a new six-year, $60 million contract extension that he signed earlier this month. Cornerback Darrelle Revis and linebacker David Harris also have expressed their desire for new deals. Jets owner Woody Johnson told the New York Daily News on Monday that fans should trust that the team will use its best judgment in negotiating contracts and picking personnel. Auction for Texas Rangers Will Take Place August 4

Filed under: MLB Biz, Sports Business and MediaThe Texas Rangers could have a new owner by Labor Day.

On the third day of often-contentious hearings about the fate of the cash-strapped Major League Baseball club in Fort Worth, federal bankruptcy judge Michael Lynn said the franchise will be auctioned off on August 4. The decision likely favors the investor group headed by Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg and Rangers president Nolan Ryan, whose deal to buy the Rangers has been stalled by objections for months by objections from the club's numerous creditors.

The creditors -- a group that includes everyone from investment bank JP Morgan to Texas state tax authorities to New Era, the hat company -- had been pushing for a Sept. 30 auction date, in order to provide more time for prospective bidders to line up partners and financial arrangements to purchase the club. The Rangers declared bankruptcy in May and have been funded by MLB since last season. The team's creditors have long objected to the terms of Greenberg/Ryan group's deal to purchase the Rangers, which was initially announced last December and has been tied up in legal wrangling for months.

The tussle over the club's ownership saga has taken on an even higher profile because of the Rangers' on-field success this season -- the team is currently in first place in the American League West -- and the prospect that one of baseball's best teams could advance to the postseason without an owner.Miami Heat Cavs Cleveland Cavaliers Dan Gilbert

Getting to know you: Childress values recent visit with Favre

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Brad Childress sat forward in his chair Friday and, in his scratchy, out-of-key baritone, started an old Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune. "Getting to know you. Getting to know all about you," Childress sang, the melody barely detectable. This was the Minnesota Vikings coach's unique explanation of his first season with Brett Favre, the behind-the-scenes back-and-forth that helped frame the man behind the helmet and all those NFL records.

"I don't profess to be a Favre-istorian or anything like that," Childress said. The education hasn't stopped for Childress, who recently returned from his second visit this year to Favre's home in Mississippi. Childress didn't return to Minnesota with a better idea about his starting quarterback for the season, he said, but he did bring back an even stronger understanding of Favre's way of life and his way of thinking. "The Deep South is different, and he'd be the first to tell you that," Childress said Friday afternoon in an interview with The Associated Press at team headquarters. The coach recalled his drive to Hattiesburg from New Orleans, bewildered by all the bugs hitting his windshield. "I felt like it was raining," Childress said. "He goes, 'That's the Deep South, Brad.'" Recovering from left ankle surgery and working out with local high school kids, Favre has yet to declare his intention for 2010. Childress said the situation was "all quiet," one week before training camp starts. Continuing to speak in uncertainties about Favre's return, which is seen around the football world as a foregone conclusion, Childress said the time spent with the quarterback has given him more clarity about the 40-year-old's thought process related to continuing his career. Childress also said those conversations and observations will help grow their relationship should Favre decide to play a 20th season. Childress downplayed their sideline argument about Favre's safety during a December game at Carolina while the Vikings' offense was struggling. Childress said the time it took to learn each other's idiosyncrasies was natural. "Yeah, we banged heads. Like once," Childress said. "You could say I knew him from the outside and I knew his body of work, but I probably didn't know the wiring that was involved with that. Safe to say he didn't know how I was wired." The Vikings have other good players and other intriguing story lines, but none of them captivate quite such as Favre, love him or loathe him. Though the coach was relaxed as can be at the office, wearing sandals, shorts and a purple polo before his last quiet summer weekend began, Favre was clearly on his mind. Twice, Childress was asked about his lingering feelings from the NFC Championship Game loss to the Saints, and in both answers, he found a way to work in a couple of comments about Favre. Childress also said there's no rift between him and running back Adrian Peterson, who missed a mandatory minicamp last month to attend a hometown festival in his honor in Texas. "We're both men," Childress said. "It wasn't earth-shattering. It wasn't the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination." Will it be the end of the world if Favre doesn't come back? The always placid coach wouldn't acknowledge any anxiety about it. "He knows that nothing's promised," Childress said. "He can say he's coming back and pull a calf the first day, and he can't get over it. ... He knows how fragile this thing is." Pittsburgh Steelers Give Mike Tomlin Two-Year Contract Extension

Filed under: Steelers, NFL CoachingPITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed coach Mike Tomlin to a two-year contract extension through the 2012 season, with an option year in 2013.

The extension was expected because the Steelers' policy has been to sign a coach before he begins the final season of a contract. Tomlin is only the Steelers' third coach since 1969, following Chuck Noll (1969-91) and Bill Cowher (1992-2006).

Tomlin is 31-17 in three seasons, with two division titles, an AFC championship and a Super Bowl victory. During the 2008 season, he became the youngest coach-he was 36-to win the Super Bowl when the Steelers beat Arizona 27-23.

"Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. "His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success."

The Steelers were 9-7 and missed the playoffs last season. They open training camp July 30 at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.

Tomlin made an average of $2.5 million per season under the contract he signed upon succeeding Cowher in January 2007. His new contract is expected to at least double that.

Ex-Cavaliers C Ilgauskas signs with Heat (AP)

MIAMI (AP)?For the Miami Heat, the first priority of the summer was the big
moves, the names like LeBron James(notes), Dwyane Wade(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes).
It?s been all about big men since.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes) became the third center to sign with the Heat in less
than 24 hours on Saturday, completing a deal he agreed in principle to about
five days earlier. On Friday, the Heat completed contracts with returning Miami
veteran Joel Anthony(notes) and rookie draft pick Dexter Pittman(notes). And Miami?s next move
is expected to be the re-signing of another 7-footer, Jamaal Magloire(notes).
That?s roughly 28 feet of centers in all, with the 7-foot-3 Ilgauskas
standing taller than everyone else on Miami?s now-bursting depth chart at
center. The Lithuanian?who was drafted by Cleveland in 1996 and has never
suited up for any other NBA club?is 12th among all active players with 1,269
blocks, and 21st among current players in rebounds with 5,904.
?As we continue to shape our roster, we have filled a key position with the
addition of Zydrunas,? Heat president Pat Riley said in a release. ?He is a
two-time All-Star, a proven rebounder, and a great shot blocker. His place in
NBA history is already clear, and we are pleased to be able to add a seasoned
veteran of his caliber to our roster.?
Ilgauskas averaged 7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds last season for Cleveland,
playing as a backup behind Shaquille O?Neal(notes). He was part of a three-way
midseason trade and ended up in Washington, which bought out his deal without
Ilgauskas ever playing a second for the Wizards. After the NBA?s mandated 30-day
waiting period, Ilgauskas returned to Cleveland.
But when James announced his decision to join Miami, it seemed almost
certain that Ilgauskas would follow. To him, it made sense for three reasons:
His wife Jennifer has plenty of family in South Florida, James wanted him to
join the rebuilt and suddenly loaded Heat roster, and Ilgauskas is still chasing
his first championship ring.
?LeBron gets a lot of the credit for this one,? Wade said.
Ilgauskas is the ninth player to sign with Miami for the coming season.
After Magloire, the Heat are expected to add Juwan Howard(notes) and Carlos Arroyo(notes) in
the coming days, and it seems possible that free agent James Jones(notes)?who was
with Miami last season?could also return. Free agent point guards Keyon
Dooling(notes) and Chris Quinn(notes), both former Miami players, are targets as well.

Source: Cardinals Considering Oswalt, Haren, Westbrook, Sheets

Filed under: Cardinals, MLB Rumors, FanHouse Exclusive, MLB Trade Deadline

The Cardinals are in hot pursuit of a starting pitcher, and it's not limited to Roy Oswalt. The team is considering Oswalt, Dan Haren, Jake Westbrook and Ben Sheets, an industry source said, but trying to work around financial considerations.

Oswalt is due just over $5 million for the rest of 2010, plus $16 million in 2011. He has a club option for $16 million, with a $2 million buyout, for 2012. There has been some indication that Oswalt would not insist on the option being exercised for him to waive his no-trade clause to St. Louis, but he would to go to another team.

There is particular concern within the organization about Haren, another source said. Haren is due to make $12.75 million in 2011 and 2012, with a $3.5 million buyout or a $15.5 million club option for 2013. That's a guaranteed investment of $32 million.

Westbrook and Sheets would be the cheapest alternatives. Sheets has about $3.5 million remaining on his one-year deal, but the A's, who are desperate for prospects and have a low payroll, may be willing to pick up some of that in exchange for better prospects. Westbrook has about $4 million remaining on his $11 million salary for 2010.Amare Stoudemire King James Cavaliers Paul Pierce

Kennison re-signs with Chiefs, then ends 13-year NFL career

Wide receiver Eddie Kennison signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday so he could retire as a member of the team.

Kennison played in 91 games for the Chiefs, from 2001 through 2007. He ranks seventh in team history with 5,230 receiving yards and is eighth with 321 receptions. He also ranks fourth with 17 games with at least 100 receiving yards. "I am honored and humbled to officially conclude my NFL playing career as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs," Kennison said in a statement released by the team. "My family is extremely grateful to the Hunt family, Scott Pioli and the Chiefs organization for making this moment possible. Kansas City has a special place in our hearts and has truly become our home. I feel very blessed to have been extended the opportunity to retire as a member (of) the Chiefs." Kennison was a first-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 1996 and played with that team until 1998. He played for the New Orleans Saints (1999), Chicago Bears (2000) and Denver Broncos (2001) before joining the Chiefs in the middle of the 2001 season. He rejoined the Rams for one season in 2008. Kennison finishes his 13-year NFL career with 548 receptions for 8,345 yards with 42 touchdowns. The Associated Press contributed to this report Dolphins Bears Vikings Minnesota Vikings

Rams, Bradford's agent start contract talks; deal not likely soon

The St. Louis Rams opened contract negotiations with rookie quarterback Sam Bradford's agent Friday, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora and Michael Lombardi confirmed. However, a team official told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that a deal with the No. 1 overall draft pick isn't expected to come soon.

Speculation has been rampant that Bradford could receive up to $50 million in guaranteed money -- much more than the $41.7 million that last year's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Matthew Stafford, was given by the Detroit Lions. According to the Post-Dispatch, agent Tom Condon is representing Bradford and chief operating officer Kevin Demoff is negotiating for the Rams. The Rams are scheduled to open training camp July 28, but Bradford has previously said he expects to be under contract by then. "At this point right now, (Condon) hasn't given me any indication that there's going to be any problems getting a contract done," Bradford told NFL.com's Steve Wyche last month at the NFL Rookie Symposium. "I expect to be in camp, on time." A.J. Feeley worked as the Rams' starting quarterback during offseason drills, but Bradford took snaps with the first team as organized team activities and minicamps progressed. Thursday-and-Long: Why Can't Terrell Owens Get a Job?

Filed under: Bills, Chargers, Seahawks, NFL Training Camp, NFL AnalysisThe freezing out of Terrell Owens is reaching the point where it makes no sense. It made a little sense in the early part of the offseason, when Owens was looking for $5 million and teams were understandably uninterested in giving that much money to a guy with that much baggage and that many question marks. But now, on the eve of training camp, Owens is being more reasonable and is looking for a job. And the fact that he hasn't found one makes no sense. The fact that teams that could seriously use him are coming out publicly and saying they're not interested is unfathomable.

San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith, asked this week about his team's interest in T.O., said, "We're all set right now with our receivers." With all due respect to Smith, that is a false statement. The Chargers, a pass-first team with a rookie running back and Super Bowl expectations, are anything but set at receiver. Their top wideout, Vincent Jackson, is in the middle of a contract dispute, facing a three-game suspension and, according to some league scuttlebutt, on the trading block. That basically leaves them with Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee to start the season, and not a lot of depth at the position even beyond that.Dolphins Bears Vikings Minnesota Vikings

Westbrook has about $4 million remaining on his $11 million salary for 2010.Vikings Minnesota Vikings Bret Favre Redskins

Andy Schleck Takes Stage 17; Alberto Contador Nears Tour de France Crown

COL DU TOURMALET, France (AP) -- Andy Schleck won the most prestigious stage of this year's Tour de France, while defending champion Alberto Contador finished second Thursday to virtually guarantee a third title.

Schleck knew he needed to pick up time on Contador in the 17th stage, and tried to break away with six miles left in the climb of the legendary Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees. But Contador stuck to his Luxembourg rival as they raced in fog and drizzle.

They completed the 108 miles from Pau to the Col du Tourmalet in 5 hours, 3 minutes, 29 seconds. Contador still leads Schleck in the overall standings by eight seconds.

The two men completed the final miles of the race almost side by side, representing the two-rider battle that has been the story of this year's Tour.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was on the top of the mountain to greet them.

"The image of Alberto and Andy side by side was a great image of sport," Sarkozy said. "Alberto may win, but Andy will win next year."

Schleck and Contador braved the weather as well as the flags of fans hitting them in the face during the climb.

Third place went to Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez, who pulled away from the rest of the chasing group and finished on his own, 1 minute, 18 seconds back.Knicks Magic NBA NFL

Magic match Bulls' offer sheet to Redick (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)?The only place J.J. Redick(notes) is heading is to the bank.
In a move that highlights his remarkable NBA turnaround, the same Orlando
Magic team that once benched Redick, shelled out $19 million Friday to retain
the shooting guard. They matched a three-year offer sheet that the Chicago Bulls
made for Redick last week that could cost Orlando much more.
The decision drives the Magic deeper into the luxury tax and gives them one
of the NBA?s highest payrolls at about $93 million next season. The move keeps
Orlando?s roster mostly intact as the Magic hope continuity will overcome
Miami?s All-Star trio and Boston?s Big Three in the Eastern Conference.

?When it came down to it, when we?re talking about what we?re trying to do
here, it came down for me to pedigree, DNA, things that most people don?t think
about,? Orlando general manager Otis Smith said. ?It was less about the money
for me, being the basketball guy, and more about keeping a guy around that we?ve
had in our organization for the past four years.?
The decision was ultimately made by ownership.
Because Redick was a restricted free agent, Orlando had seven days to match
the contract. Billionaire owner Rich DeVos and team president Bob Vander Weide
took all seven days to make the move that nearly doubles Redick?s salary from
last season.
Teams have to pay a dollar for every dollar they are over the luxury tax,
which the league set at $70.3 million for next season. The tax hit is based on
the roster at the end of the season, meaning it?s likely the Magic could make
trades before then to lessen the financial burden.
Orlando should find relief in a new downtown arena that opens this year and
creates new revenue streams. Smith also believes a roster that remains one of
the deepest in the league is attractive for potential moves and doesn?t mortgage
the Magic?s future.
?The fact that we have players that other teams want makes you pretty
flexible,? Smith said. ?Is it possible to give out contracts and move a little
bit less money? Sure. My thing is you don?t want to take a step back with
talent.?
At the very least, keeping Redick assures that.
The former Duke standout was the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft. He
struggled early in his NBA career but has become a significant contributor for
the Magic.
So much so that Smith decided that Redick and recently signed small forward
Quentin Richardson(notes) had more value than Matt Barnes(notes), who became a free agent
after one season with Orlando. Smith said he never offered Barnes a deal and all
but ruled out the small forward returning next season.
?It really came down to out of those three, which of the two do we bring
in?? Smith said. ?We like what Matt brought to the table, but sometimes you
have to make decisions that?s best for your club long-term.?
Now Redick is a part of those plans.
He might also be a future starter after Vince Carter(notes) becomes a free agent
next summer. Redick, who was vacationing in Europe and not immediately available
for comment, was told of the decision Thursday night by Magic coach Stan Van
Gundy.
That alone shows how far Redick has come.
Van Gundy limited Redick?s playing time so much in 2008 that the shooting
guard and his agent went public with the frustration, asking to get more minutes
or be traded.
?He and I laugh about it now. His agent and I laugh about it now,? Smith
said. ?Back to what he was to what he has made himself become, he?s made
himself into a better basketball player. We kind of snicker about it now just
because he put in the work, got better and it really became harder to keep him
off the court.?
Redick continued to mold himself into an all-around player and not just a
strong shooter. His passing skills are among the team?s best, he whipped himself
into shape and is no longer a defensive liability.
Redick averaged 9.6 points per game off the bench last season. He also was a
consistent perimeter player in the Eastern Conference finals against Boston?
while Carter struggled?and averaged 11.2 points in the series.
?You can?t have enough guys on your roster who at their core is just
winning and that losing actually bothers him,? Smith said. ?And he?s one of
those guys who at their core are just winners, and you want to keep them
around.?

Free-agent guard Pitts schedules Tuesday workout for teams

Free-agent guard Chester Pitts, who's on the mend from microfracture knee surgery, is scheduled to work out for NFL teams Tuesday in Arizona, according to his agent, Andrew Kessler.

Pitts, a longtime starter for the Houston Texans, is one of the few in-demand free agents still available. He started every game for the Texans from his rookie season in 2002 through 2008. Pitts played in just two games last season before undergoing the surgery. Kessler refused to comment on the teams who will attend to scout Pitts, saying they have asked him not to release their identities. However, Pitts has drawn interest from several teams throughout the offseason, including the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. Pitts is hopeful of signing with a team before the start of training camp. New England Saints Drew Brees Payton Manning

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said there is no timetable for Bradford to start. Kobe Bryant LA Lakers Boston Celtics 76ers

Kobe Bryant Deadlocks Tiger Woods as America's Favorite Sports Star

Filed under: Sports BusinessNEW YORK (AP) -- Tiger Woods has dropped into a tie with Kobe Bryant as the favorite American sports star.

Woods had held the position alone since 2006, but the Los Angeles Lakers guard moved up from fourth last year to grab a share of the top spot, Harris Interactive said Tuesday.

LeBron James dropped from third to sixth in the company's survey of 2,227 adults conducted online from June 14-21, before he left Cleveland to sign with Miami. Retired NBA star Michael Jordan fell from second to seventh.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter moved up one spot to third and quarterback Brett Favre went from ninth to fourth. Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning was fifth, up from seventh.

New England quarterback Tom Brady, who failed to make the top 10 last year, returned at No. 8, followed by New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees and NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr.

NASCAR's Jeff Gordon and St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols dropped out of the top 10.

Among female athletes, sisters Serena and Venus Williams were 1-2, followed by race car driver Danica Patrick, retired soccer star Mia Hamm and tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova.

Volleyball player Misty May-Treanor was tied for seventh with gymnast Shawn Johnson, basketball player Lisa Leslie was ninth, and retired tennis players Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova were tied for 10th.

Dropping out of the top 10 were basketball's Candace Parker, golfer Annika Sorenstam, former tennis star Chris Evert and skater Michelle Kwan.Dario Franchitti Ron Hornaday Tony Schumacher Roger Federer
