The Cardinals are in hot pursuit of a starting pitcher, and it's not limited to Roy Oswalt. The team is considering Oswalt, Dan Haren, Jake Westbrook and Ben Sheets, an industry source said, but trying to work around financial considerations.
Oswalt is due just over $5 million for the rest of 2010, plus $16 million in 2011. He has a club option for $16 million, with a $2 million buyout, for 2012. There has been some indication that Oswalt would not insist on the option being exercised for him to waive his no-trade clause to St. Louis, but he would to go to another team.
There is particular concern within the organization about Haren, another source said. Haren is due to make $12.75 million in 2011 and 2012, with a $3.5 million buyout or a $15.5 million club option for 2013. That's a guaranteed investment of $32 million.
Westbrook and Sheets would be the cheapest alternatives. Sheets has about $3.5 million remaining on his one-year deal, but the A's, who are desperate for prospects and have a low payroll, may be willing to pick up some of that in exchange for better prospects. Westbrook has about $4 million remaining on his $11 million salary for 2010.Vikings
