Filed under: USCPat Haden is set to supplant Mike Garrett as the athletic director at the University of Southern California and its replica Heisman Trophy -- which was won by Reggie Bush -- will be returned, the school announced Tuesday afternoon. The Los Angeles Times first reported the story on Tuesday morning.
Garrett (right), the former Heisman Trophy winner who has been under fire since the school was slapped with several penalties by the NCAA for violations uncovered in the school's football and basketball programs, is expected to take USC's retirement package. Haden, a former quarterback with USC and the the Los Angeles Rams, will take over Aug. 3.
"This is not something I thought about doing, nor something even on my radar," Haden said. "But I began to see it as a challenge, as something new. And when my wife agreed -- and she really doesn't follow sports closely -- I took a closer look."
Haden has been a member of the USC board of trustees for 19 years, two more years longer than Garrett, 66, has served as the school's AD. Haden told the newspaper that one his first moves would be to create an associate athletic director position to oversee the football program, a spot he'd like J.K. McKay, son of late USC coach John McKay, to fill.
