Filed under: Yankees, MLB InjuriesNEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte, coming off the best first half of his career, left Sunday's start for the Yankees in the third inning with what the team called a strained left groin. Pettitte went for an MRI exam during the game, but there was no immediate prognosis.
Petttitte showed signs on discomfort on 2-1 pitch to Tampa Bay's Kelly Shoppach. Manager Joe Girardi, pitching coach Dave Eiland and manager Gene Monahan came to the mound, and Pettitte threw one test pitch. But he bent over after the toss and was led to the dugout.
The temperature at game time was 91 degrees, which could have contributed to cramping.
David Robertson replaced Pettitte and finished the walk to Shoppach, loading the bases, before escaping the jam. Pettitte, who gave up a three-run homer to Carlos Pena in the first inning, was charged with three runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batter in his 2 1/3 innings. But he got no decision, as Mark Teixeira's RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied the game 3-3.Tigers
