Nathan Adrian wins gold in 100 free

Adrian finished in 47.52 seconds, beating the reigning world champ, Australia's James Magnussen by .01 seconds.

Canada's Brent Hayden won bronze in 47.80.

Adrian is the first American to win gold in the event since Matt Biondi in 1988.

Adrian was the top seed in the 100 free final, with Magnussen next to him as the second seed.

Magnussen and Adrian went head-to-head in the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay Sunday night. Both swam the first leg, and Adrian beat Magnussen by .14 seconds. France surged ahead on the last leg and won the gold.

The other American who qualified for the 100 free at trials, Cullen Jones, did not make the final.
