The first half of the 2010 season has been about ...
Brett Favre.
The failures of the Cowboys.
Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb and Rex Grossman.
And about selected folks who deserve it: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, the usual suspects, plus the rookies Sam Bradford and Ndamukong Suh (both as defensive tackle and placekicker), who may end up as the first players taken 1-2 in the draft to win offensive and defensive rookie of the year, respectively.
But there are others who deserve notice for jobs well done at the midway point. And since we're limited to a dozen, we'll limit it to a dozen players on winning teams (or division "leaders" at 4-4, like St. Louis), which eliminates players who should certainly be noticed, notably Cleveland's Peyton Hillis. Most of these guys will probably not get many postseason honors, although a few of them should make the Pro Bowl.
A few are household names, like Richard Seymour and Eli Manning, of football's best-known household. Others are like Charlie Peprah of the Packers, one of those revolving bodies whose name comes on and off the waiver wire two or three times a year and get to play when a team has no other choice.
