Vermont headed to Cleveland for NIT opening round

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) The University of Vermont men's basketball team is headed to Cleveland for the first round of the NIT.

The Catamounts are traveling to Cleveland on Monday where they will prepare for a first-round game against Cleveland State, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday.

UVM coach Mike Lonergan says his staff will hunt for film of Cleveland State and hustle up a scouting report.

The Burlington Free Press says the Cats earned an automatic bid to the 32-team NIT after winning the America East Conference regular-season title.

But their hopes of returning to the NCAA tournament were dashed with a loss to Stony Brook in the semifinals of the league postseason tournament

Vermont is seeded seventh in its NIT bracket, while Cleveland State is the second seed.
