MILWAUKEE -- Most players ignore the rumors as baseball counts down to the Trade Deadline. Both John Grabow and Koyie Hill were happy they came true in their careers and the two were dealt at the Deadline.
The Cubs acquired Grabow on July 30, 2009, from the Pirates along with Tom Gorzelanny for Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio and Josh Harrison. Hill was playing for the Dodgers' Triple-A team when he was traded July 31, 2004, to the D-backs.
"At the time, I knew something was going to happen because the Pirates were unloading everyone," Grabow said. "I think I was the last or second to last trade that year. It was a matter of waiting to see what happens and waiting for my agent to call. I knew there was a good chance I'd get traded."
The Cubs reliever had heard rumors and people had sent him text messages for updates.
"You really don't know until someone actually calls you," Grabow said. "I was excited when I was traded here because I was traded from a team in last place to a team that was in first place."
Plus, it was just Grabow, his wife and his dog. They were able to relocate fairly easily.
"It's hardest on your family, and moving your family from one city to another," he said.
Hill was thrilled when he got the call because it meant he was being promoted to the Major Leagues. He was playing for Triple-A Las Vegas, then dealt to the D-Backs who were playing the Rockies. He was in the lineup against Colorado the next day.
"I'd just gotten settled in, and then I broke my ankle," he said. "It was a short ride."
It's a little different waiting out the Trade Deadline in the Minor Leagues vs. the Majors.
"There, it's like you've got nothing to lose," Hill said. "Here, especially if you've been here for a couple years, it might be somewhere you want to stay. You should all be happy to be here in the first place."
