A national sports columnist says his hate mail has been "going nuts" since writing a column accusing quarterback Tim Tebow of "blasphemy" for believing his faith will help him succeed in the NFL.
Tebow has been very upfront about his religious beliefs since he was star at Florida.
Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com tweeted yesterday that readers and tweeters have been ripping him since questioning Tebow's comments to the Denver Post that he's "relying as always on my faith" as he competes for the starting QB job with the Denver Broncos.
"Its like someone spilled Pat Robertson all over my inbox," Doyel tweeted.
In the column, Doyel questioned why the former Heisman Trophy winner, currently second on the depth chart behind Kyle Orton, believes "God's plan for him involves the spectacular, not the mundane."
Writes Doyel:
Tebow has been a great billboard for Christianity -- just as Muhammad Ali has been a great billboard for Islam, and Sandy Koufax a great billboard for Judaism -- but that doesn't mean he will be rewarded with a starting job in the NFL. Maybe deep inside his heart Tebow knows that, but from the outside it doesn't look that way. From the outside it looks like Tebow equates his love for God in heaven with tangible rewards here on earth. And that's more than wrong. It's blasphemy.
A reader named Chance Jones wrote he found Doyel's article "extremely offensive," that he forwarded his objections to CBS Sports and that he would no longer be a customer. "You'll be back. When you're finished burning books," responded Doyel.
Another reader named Heather B. wrote the "ignorant" Doyel is "going to hell." But reader Chad Alford agreed with the column. "I'm a born-again Christian, but I think your article is dead on. I have often questioned Tim's rationale because, quite honestly, God NEVER promised us in His Word that life would be easy and we would get everything we want."
