DALLAS -- Negotiators for the NFL and NFL Players Association met on Saturday in their first formal collective bargaining session since November.

Neither side would characterize the tenor or content of the deliberations, but after a two-hour meeting both the NFL and the union pledged to meet aggressively over the next four weeks.

The current CBA expires in less than four weeks, and both sides said this week that a work stoppage could occur if no new deal is reached.

On Friday, commissioner Roger Goodell said that there is an urgent need to reach before the current deal's expiration to avoid serious financial consequences that could follow with a lockout.

He told the parties they needed to have intensive, round-the-clock meetings to achieve a deal.

After Saturday's meeting, the sides said in a joint statement that they intend to try that.

"We plan to increase the number, length and intensity of bargaining sessions so that we can reach agreement before the March 4 expiration of the current CBA," the parties said.
