ATLANTA -- Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond continues to struggle at the plate. Entering Saturday's action against the Braves, Desmond was hitting .224 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.
However, Desmond is playing solid defense. He has made only 13 errors, and it seems like he makes at least one great play per game. Last year, Desmond led the Major Leagues with 34 errors.
Ask if Desmond concentrated too much on defense this season, Nationals manager Davey Johnson said that was not the case. Johnson believes Desmond will snap out of his hitting slump, and, the skipper even told Desmond that he had the potential to become another Barry Larkin, who played 19 great years with the Reds.
Johnson did admit that Desmond is currently chasing a lot pitches out of the strike zone.
"He does a lot of things. He has speed, he has good hands, strong arm," Johnson said. "He can hit anywhere in the lineup, especially one, two or three. I wouldn't mind him being up there.
"But the league still knows more about him than he knows about the league and about himself. It's just a matter of him taking care of No. 1, doing the things that he could do, and get locked in a little better."
Pudge OK after feeling tightness in oblique
ATLANTA -- Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez took 25 swings off a tee on Saturday afternoon, but had to shut it down after feeling tightness in his right oblique.
The tightness is not considered serious and, according to manager Davey Johnson, Rodriguez believes he will be ready to play when he's eligible to come off the disabled list late next week.
Later in the day, Rodriguez was seen playing catch with Alex Cora without any problems.
Before going on the disabled list, Rodriguez played in 39 games and was hitting .214 with two homers and 19 RBIs.
When he is activated, Rodriguez will play once every three games, while Wilson Ramos will get the bulk of the work behind the plate.
