FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) Pete Thomas took his lumps as a freshman starting quarterback at Colorado State.
"I feel a whole lot more confident out there with the whole offense," Thomas said. "I have a year of experience under my belt and we're all a lot more confident in own roles."
Chris Nwoke scored on a two-point conversion after running for a 4-yard touchdown on the final play as the Green squad won 15-14 over the Gold squad in Colorado State's spring football game Saturday.
Nwoke ran for 52 yards on 13 carries. M.J. McPeek was 9 for 20 for 75 yards and a 9-yard scoring throw to Brett Etherton for the Green team.
Garrett Grayson was 5 of 7 for 37 yards and scored on a 1-yard scramble. Derek Good led all rushers with 75 yards and had a 7-yard TD run for the Gold.
Thomas was limited to two series of work for the Gold and was 1 for 3 for 16 yards. He was intercepted by Ezra Thompson in the end zone.
"I still felt like I picked up the offense pretty well last year," Thomas said. "I learned from the experience and am comfortable enough to where I'm not thinking out there when I'm playing where it lets me play a little faster."
Fourth-year coach Steve Fairchild said Colorado State had its most productive spring since he was hired.
"Pete is not the only reason, but he is a big reason for that," he said. "You have a quarterback where now we can really get into some of the situations, some of the two-minute drills stuff that we were just hanging on for dear life last year because of his inexperience. Now we can start working at it."
The Rams are coming off a 3-9 record and open the 2011 season Sept. 3 at New Mexico.
