MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Senior Taylor Matson has been named captain of the Minnesota's men's hockey team for the 2011-12 season.
The university said Monday that team members voted Matson captain. He succeeds former high school teammate Jay Barriball in leading the Gophers.
Matson scored 10 goals in 33 games for Minnesota last season. He had two multiple-goal games last year.
The 22-year-old Mound, Minn., native missed the Gophers' final game of the regular season at Bemidji State and both WCHA first-round playoff games against Alaska Anchorage with an injury.
Matson has 13 goals, six assists and only 24 penalty minutes in 55 career games for Minnesota.
