Darchinyan defeats Perez on technical decision

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Vic Darchinyan defeated Yonnhy Perez by a technical decision after their scheduled 12-round bantamweight fight Saturday was stopped at 1:07 of the fifth round because Perez had a cut near his eye.

The fight at the Nokia Theatre went to the scorecards because the cut between Perez's eyes was the result of an accidental head butt.

An extremely aggressive Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27 knockouts) dominated a listless Perez (20-2-1, 14 KOs) from beginning to end to win by three identical scores of 50-44.

Darchinyan, a southpaw who has held titles at flyweight and junior bantamweight, put Perez down in the second round and landed dozens of punishing lefts in his most-impressive performance at 118-pounds.

The fighters' heads collided a minute into the fifth round, after which blood gushed from a cut above his right eye.

Dr. Paul Wallace stopped the fight moments after examining it.

"He suffered an arterial bleed," Wallace said. "One of his blood vessels had been cut and it was pumping directly into his eye. He gave no indication he wanted to stop."

Darchinyan confirmed that the cut was the result of an accidental head.

"It was a head butt," Darchinyan said. "But if it wasn't a head butt, I would've knocked him out."

The fight was the third-place match in Showtime's bantamweight tournament.

IBF bantamweight titleholder Joseph Agbeko was scheduled to fight Abner Mares in the tournament final but Agbeko pulled out on Wednesday because of a back injury.

Agbeko took the IBF title from Perez.
