AP source: Vermont's Lonergan close to GW job

WASHINGTON Mike Lonergan is the new men's basketball coach at George Washington.

The school announced Friday that Lonergan will succeed Karl Hobbs, who was fired last month.

The 45-year-old Lonergan has been the coach at Vermont since 2005. He had a 126-68 record with the Catamounts and led them to the NCAA tournament in 2010. The school also played in the NIT in 2007 and 2011, and the CBI in 2009. This year's team finished 23-9.

The GW job returns Lonergan to the nation's capital, where he won the NCAA's Division III national title in 2001 with his alma mater, Catholic. He left Catholic in 2004 and spent one season as an assistant under Gary Williams at Maryland before moving to Vermont, where he succeeded Tom Brennan.
