Report: Firing Weis cost Irish $6M and counting

Notre Dame sent former football coach Charlie Weis packing in November 2009 after five seasons and a lackluster 35-27 record, cutting short the final six years of the 10-year extension he signed during his stellar first season on the job.

But apparently the break wasn't quite so clean. Notre Dame will continue to pay him through 2015, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Notre Dame initially gave Weis a "termination payment" totaling more than $6.6 million, but is still on the hook for "much smaller annual payments through December 2015" according to university tax documents reviewed by the Tribune.

The amount of the annual payments wasn't disclosed, but Weis should be able to get by just fine. He signed a three-year deal worth $2.495 million to be Will Muschamp's offensive coordinator at Florida.

Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report.
