CHICAGO -- In just his second start of the season, Jake Peavy gave White Sox fans more hope that the team is moving in the right direction.
The right-hander managed to shut down Cleveland's red-hot bats in Chicago's 1-0 victory, holding the Indians to just three hits in a complete-game masterpiece. Cleveland came into the game having won three straight, while putting up 31 runs in those games.
Chicago got on the board early, with Juan Pierre leading off the first inning with a double and then scoring on an Adam Dunn sacrifice fly. It turned out to be all the offense the White Sox needed.
Peavy (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, and first since June 25 of last season when he pitched seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over the crosstown Cubs.
He was in control on the mound, striking out eight Cleveland batters and walking none. He also received help from his defense, with center fielder Brent Lillibridge making a sliding catch into the left-center-field wall to rob Orlando Cabrera of extra bases to lead off the eighth inning.
The win moved the White Sox (19-25) to within nine games of the first-place Indians (26-14).
