Kansas' lone loss of the season last month to Texas was outstripped in the eyes of the voters by the Longhorns' three losses Monday, as the Jayhawks rose to No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll.
But the difference came down to one vote.
Kansas, which last held the top spot in February 2010 amid a four-week stay, received 14 of the 31 first-place votes. Texas garnered 13.
Ohio State, the unanimous No. 1 for the past three weeks, dropped to third after losing its first game of the season Saturday to Wisconsin in Madison. The Buckeyes received three first-place votes.
Pittsburgh, which beat Texas in November at New York's Madison Square Garden, remained in fourth and picked up one first-place vote.
Since falling to Connecticut in overtime on Jan. 8, the Longhorns have been the hottest team in the country and rose to their best ranking since topping the poll for two weeks last January.
The next four spots remained as they were, as No. 5 Duke was followed by San Diego State, Notre Dame and BYU.
The Badgers broke into the top 10 with the win over Ohio State, vaulting four spots from last week.
Purdue, Connecticut, Arizona, Villanova and Florida rounded out the top 15, followed by Louisville, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Syracuse.
Temple re-entered the poll at 25th after a four-week absence, preceded by Missouri, Kentucky, Saint Mary's and Utah State.
Kansas and Texas face stern tests this week, with the Jayhawks visiting Kansas State on Monday night (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET) and the Longhorns hosting Oklahoma State on Wednesday (ESPN2, 9 p.m. ET).
Ohio State will get its first chance at redemption on Tuesday (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET) against Michigan State.
