Harrison Barnes is coming back to Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina freshman announced Monday that he will return to the Tar Heels for his sophomore season -- making the Heels the early favorite to not only be the preseason No. 1 team next season but also to win the national championship.
Barnes averaged 15.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in his first season with North Carolina. He helped lead the Tar Heels to a 29-8 record and to the verge of the Final Four before they lost to Kentucky in the East Regional final in Newark.
In a statement released by the school, Barnes said that his experiences at North Carolina are something he can't put behind him just yet.
"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision. But I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina. I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. The experiences I've enjoyed on and off the court will be invaluable. These experiences will help fuel my journey in the NBA and beyond."
Barnes' announcement comes a few weeks after Tyler Zeller and John Henson also said that they would be returning to Chapel Hill next season. Along with point guard Kendall Marshall and a host of other returning players, the Tar Heels will enter the season with a target on their backs.
The freshman said he looks forward to one day reaching the NBA, but that time isn't now.
"As an 18-year old, I'm in the early stages of my life journey," Barnes says. "I'm honored and blessed for the chance to play in the NBA. And because of my family, teachers, passion, and work, I have the ultimate dream of one day playing and experiencing a fulfilling career in the NBA."
