NFL owners and players will resume negotiations toward a new collective bargaining agreement Wednesday and Thursday in Boston. League commissioner Roger Goodell talked about the latest developments from the owners' get-together Tuesday near Chicago.
"There's an urgency for everybody to get this done," said Goodell, adding there's no drop-dead date to resolve an impasse that's extended beyond 100 days.
"The good news here is the principals are talking, and I think both sides are working to try and reach an agreement," he said.
As for today's briefing to the owners on the recent talks that have occurred behind the scenes between league and (former) union?
"It was a good day in the sense that we had a full discussion on the issues. And I think our ownership continues to be determined to reach an agreement, make sure we play that full season," said Goodell.
"They're united. They believe that in the best interests of the game, we need to correct various aspects of collective bargaining. But everyone's determined to try to get that done and still have the full 2011 season."
The commish said he hopes the frequency of meetings with the dissolved NFLPA will pick up. He also offered this message to the league's frustrated fans:
"We're working as hard as we possibly can, and we'll go the extra mile to try to reach that agreement. We know how important football is to fans, and we want to deliver on that."
