USA's Kim Rhode shoots near perfect round for gold in skeet

Rhode clinched the medal with seven shots to go in a dazzling performance that made her the first U.S athlete in an individual sport to win five medals in five consecutive Olympics.

Rhode won golds in double trap in 1996 and 2004, a silver in skeet in 2008 and a bronze in double trap in 1996.

With her final score of 99 points, Rhode equaled the world record held by Slovakia's Danka Bartekova, who earned the bronze with 90 in a shoot-off. The near perfect round also set a new Olympic record.

Upon hitting her final two targets, Rhode broke out in a wide grin and pumped her right fist to the roaring crowd. There was plenty of American support at the Royal Artillery Barracks, including her parents.

"Both my wife and I were crying," Rhode's father, Richard, said. "It was a great moment in my daughter's history. I ran over, hugged her and told her I loved her. She was crying, too."

Wei Ning of China earned silver with 91 points.

During morning prelims, Rhode also set an Olympic record, hitting 74 of 75 targets . Italy's Chiara Canero set the previous record of 72 in 2008.
