LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Doug Beal, chief executive officer of USA Volleyball, has declared his candidacy for the presidency of FIVB, the International Volleyball Federation.
Beal has the support of the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Volleyball's board of directors in his pursuit of the position.
Beal coached the U.S. men's national team to the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He has worked on the administrative boards of both FIVB and the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation, or NORCECA.
The president of the sport's international governing body is Jizhong Wei of China, who was elected to the post in 2008. The FIVB is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The new president will be elected in September at the FIVB Congress in Anaheim, Calif.
