DENVER (AP) North Dakota goalie Brad Eidsness made 26 saves as North Dakota beat Denver 4-3 in a key Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup on Friday.
The Fighting Sioux (18-11-3, 14-10-1) jumped into fourth place in the WCHA standings with 29 points, just one point behind Denver (18-11-4, 13-8-4). UND is 6-1-1 in its last eight games.
Eidsness wasn't tested early, making just four saves in the first periods. But he was tested late as the Pioneers rallied for three goals in a span of 5:05 late in the third period.
North Dakota outshot the Pioneers 17-4 in the first period but came away up just 1-0 on Corban Knight's goal early in the period. UND had a 17-4 shots-on-goal advantage after one period. The Sioux took 15 of the game's first 16 shots and finished with a 35-29 shots-on-goal advantage.
"We came out of the gates and we were ready to go," North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said.
Drew Shore, Joey LaLeggia and Jason Zucker scored all of Denver's goals in the last 5:26 of the game. Zucker's was a power play with 11 seconds left.
Danny Kristo assisted on Corban Knight's first-period goal for the Sioux, then scored a goal of his own on a penalty shot midway through the second period. Kristo skated in to Brittain's left, then beat the goalie between the pads for a 2-0 edge. It was Kristo's 99th career point.
Carter Rowney and Stephane Pattyn scored goals in the third period for UND.
Sam Brittain started in goal for Denver but was pulled after Pattyn's goal midway through the third period. Adam Murray made three saves in 11:31 in relief of Brittain.
The Sioux have beaten Denver five of the last six times they have met.
