LONDON (AP) -- Chelsea defeated Benfica 2-1 on goals by Frank Lampard and Raul Meireles for a 3-1 aggregate win Wednesday night and will play defending champion Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals.
Real Madrid romped to a 5-2 victory over APOEL Nicosia as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to raise his goals total for the season to 49. With an 8-2 aggregate victory, Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the semis.
After winning 1-0 in Portugal last week, Chelsea extended its advantage when Lampard converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute at Stamford Bridge.
Benfica played a man short after Maxi Pereira was ejected in the 40th minute and tied it when Javi Garcia scored on a header in the 85th. Another score would have advanced Benfica on away goals, but Meireles scored on a counterattack in the second minute of stoppage time.
In Madrid, nine-time champion Real reached its second straight semifinal under coach Jose Mourinho. Ronaldo scored in the 26th minute and Kaka doubled the lead in the 36th.
Gustavo Manduca scored in the 67th for APOEL, the first Cypriot team to reach the quarterfinals. Ronaldo made it 3-1 in the 75th, and Real also got goals from substitutes Jose Callejon in the 80th and Angel di Maria in the 84th,
Esteban Solari converted a penalty kick for APOEL in the 82nd.
