There won't be any more awkward moments at the University of Arkansas regarding the woman who was key to the firing of football coach Bobby Petrino.
Jessica Dorrell, the 25-year-old employee of the football program who was a passenger on Petrino's motorcycle when it crashed on April 1, has resigned.
Athletic director Jeff Long announced Dorrell's departure in an email Tuesday night, and said he and the former mistress of the 51-year-old and married Petrino agreed the move was in the best interests of both parties.
Dorrell was hired March 28 over more than 150 other applicants as the football program's student-athlete development coordinator, a position that paid $55,735 annually.
While announcing Petrino's dismissal last week, Long pointed out to news media that only three people had been interviewed for the job, that Petrino had given Dorrell a $20,000 gift and that the coach had embarrassed the university by failing to reveal he had an "inappropriate relationship" with Dorrell at the time of the crash.
Said Long in the e-mail: "While Ms. Dorrell had a legitimate right to apply for and accept a position within the football program, the circumstances surrounding the former coach's decision to hire her compromised her ability to be effective in such a position. She and I believe she should have the opportunity to move on."
The e-mail also noted that, as part of her resignation, Dorrell agreed she won't attempt to sell or profit from her affiliation with Arkansas athletics, and that the university will pay her about $14,000 as part of "a settlement and resolution of all matters between the parties."
Dorrell will not be replaced immediately, the school said.
