Ohio State RB Jordan Hall out 10 weeks

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Jordan Hall, No. 1 on Ohio State's depth chart at running back, will be out for about 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on Friday for a cut on the bottom of his right foot.

Hall, with 817 career rushing yards, is a senior who first-year coach Urban Meyer had singled out as one of the team's top potential playmakers.

Hall was walking in grass outside his residence in Columbus when he cut his foot.

Meyer said Hall will be in a non-weight bearing cast for six weeks before rehabbing the injury for at least a month.

The Buckeyes open fall camp in about five weeks.

Junior Carlos Hyde, sophomore Rod Smith and true freshman Bri'onte Dunn are other options at the position.

Sporting News: Lots of adversity on horizon for Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N. J. ? Here's a positive for the New York Jets. They made it through minicamp without major controversy.

Accomplishing that feat during training camp and the 2012 NFL season will be far more difficult. Expect the Jets to be interesting in 2012. Don't expect them to make the playoffs, unless they overcome obvious danger signs.

Multiple factors could undermine the team. There could be a quarterback controversy involving Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. There could be a training camp holdout by their best player, cornerback Darrelle Revis. There could be more locker room turmoil fueled by their best receiver, Santonio Holmes, who feuded with Sanchez toward the end of last season.

The Jets insist they have put last season to bed. But when a team finishes 8-8 and closes with a three-game losing streak, it has much to prove.

Coach Rex Ryan could not deny that, despite putting a happy face on the Jets' minicamp that ended Thursday.

The 2011 season's end "was a low point," Ryan said. "I don't think [team chemistry] was as bad as what some people say it was, but there was certainly some issues that we had to get corrected.

"Every year, you have to go back to square one. I'm on top of it. Our coaches are on top of it. Our players understand. It's embarrassing to them ? something comes out negatively about this football team.

"I don't know how many wins we are going to have," Ryan said. "But I know we'll have that corrected. We will have a close football team. We're not going to beat ourselves with some of the infighting and all that other stuff. That's a thing of the past."

Ryan had better hope so, because his Jets will be under the microscope from Day 1 of training camp.

Start with Revis, who left the locker room Thursday with no guarantee he would report to training camp in July. Revis is the NFL's best cornerback, and he takes his contract as seriously as he takes pass coverage. He wants the Jets to renegotiate with two years left on his deal.

If the Jets don't budge Revis could hold out again, just like he did two years ago.

Being seen as the bad guy by Jets fans won't make Revis budge.

"I've been getting criticized since I was 8 years old," Revis said Thursday. "It's best for me to do what's best for my career. I don't think these guys in here are sitting here saying I'm a distraction. This is my situation, and it's come up again. I got to deal with it the best way I can."

Ryan hopes Revis reports on time.

"I'm looking forward to having Darrelle out there," Ryan said. "I think we have a heck of a football team. You guys know what I think of him as a player. Any of the other stuff, I just leave to [general manager Michael Tannenbaum] upstairs."

If Revis holds out, it will be a distraction. If his holdout is lengthy, it could make Revis more susceptible to injury after he does report.

Meanwhile, the media members covering the Jets are already closely monitoring how much time Tebow spends working with the first team during practices.

It will be hard for Sanchez not to look over his shoulder. Even during his first two seasons, when the Jets reached the AFC championship game, Sanchez had stretches of games where he struggled. Now when Sanchez is spotty, or when the Jets lose consecutive games, there will be clamoring for Tebow to play.

The Jets envision Sanchez playing well, and Tebow adding another dimension in packages designed to take advantage of his talents.

? SN player rankings: Who does Sanchez stack up? | Among cornerbacks, Revis owns an island

But the team could just as easily have two inconsistent quarterbacks playing instead of one. If so, that's no formula for making the playoffs.

While Sanchez must play better, the key to improving the offense could be a better running game. The Jets were 22nd among 32 teams in rushing last season, despite having talented offensive linemen center Nick Mangold, guard Brandon Moore and tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

The Jets open training camp July 26 in Cortland, N.Y., and Ryan has warned them not to expect Club Med. The Jets must be more physical, in better shape and more committed to their running game under new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano to make an offensive leap from last season. Neither Sanchez nor Tebow are Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady ? quarterbacks that can carry an offense without an effective running game.

"We need to run the football, there's no doubt," Ryan said. "I think we have the personnel to do it. We want to be a great fourth-quarter team. To do that, you have to be in shape."

Sanchez and Tebow were all smiles leaving the field Thursday, looking forward to working out together again in July, during Sanchez's informal "Jets West" camp in California.

At this point, the Jets can be optimistic. But once the pressure increases during training camp and the regular season, we'll find out if the 2012 Jets can handle turbulence.

Dickey first to 12 wins as Mets blank Dodgers

NYM@LAD: Dickey fans 10 over eight scoreless frames

LOS ANGELES -- With success comes attention, with attention comes demands. After pitching consecutive one-hitters earlier this month against the Rays and Orioles, R.A. Dickey's Q Score shot to the top of Major League Baseball; his celebrity was unmatched. That's what comes of a book deal, a starring role in a documentary and an unfathomable run of success at age 37.

So even before Dickey gave up five runs to the Yankees last weekend in his second-worst start of the season, Mets manager Terry Collins grew wary that all the demands on Dickey's schedule might cause him to falter -- if only just a bit.

Perhaps, as Dickey insisted, it was mere coincidence that he indeed stepped backward at Citi Field. Perhaps not. Either way, Dickey was a far sharper pitcher during Friday's 9-0 victory over the Dodgers, capping his incredible month of June with eight scoreless innings in Chavez Ravine.

"R.A. just continues to cruise along," Collins said. "Certainly it was a big weekend last weekend for him. But he came back tonight with the way he's been pitching -- under control, pound the strike zone, all the things we talk about that he's been so good at, he did tonight."

In doing those things as well as he did, Dickey became the first Major League pitcher to reach 12 wins, icing his status as an All-Star shoo-in and establishing himself the odds-on favorite to start the game for the National League. At Dodger Stadium, he also gave the Mets their third consecutive victory, which Dickey called "the sweetest glass of tea on the table."

Mostly, the knuckleballer has elevated himself to this perch by going 5-0 with a 0.93 ERA in six starts this month, throwing three complete games, pitching two shutouts, not allowing an earned run in five of six outings and going 44 2/3 innings without ceding an earned run at all. Over 48 1/3 June innings, Dickey gave up 21 hits, struck out 55 and walked eight.

"You count the days till he throws," said second baseman Daniel Murphy, who put the game out of reach with a two-run double off Harang in the fifth inning and a three-run homer against Shawn Tolleson in the seventh. "The guy's throwing the ball so well right now and he's set the bar so high. He continues to set it even higher."

Coming off his second-worst start of the season, which just so happened to be his most-hyped outing in front of a national television audience, Dickey jumped right back into the groove that he had established earlier this month in pitching consecutive one-hitters. For a long while, it seemed as if he might even throw his third one-hitter in four starts, after Andres Torres pulled up short in front of pitcher Aaron Harang's routine third-inning fly ball.

The resulting single was the only hit Dickey allowed over the first six innings, before giving up a clean hit to A.J. Ellis in the seventh and a double to Tony Gwynn in the eighth.

The only other Dodgers baserunner against Dickey came with two outs in the sixth, when Dickey plunked Dee Gordon with a first-pitch, 84 mph fastball -- an offering that Dickey said had "slipped." But because it came half an inning after Harang hit Ruben Tejada with a pitch of his own, that prompted home-plate umpire Todd Tichenor to warn both benches. There were no further incidents in the game.

Tejada earned Harang's attention by rapping out three of his career-high four hits against him, reaching base five times in total and scoring twice. But he was hardly alone. Lucas Duda snapped an 0-for-15 skid with a run-scoring single in the fifth off Harang, while David Wright opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third.

Mostly, though, the night belonged to Dickey, taking advantage of a Dodgers team playing without injured stars Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. Dickey faced just one significant jam all game, walking Bobby Abreu and giving up his second hit to Ellis with one out in the seventh. But the knuckleballer promptly induced James Loney to hit into an inning-ending double play, ending the threat.

"With a guy like him, we're obviously not the only club at this point who he has given trouble to," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "To me, if you are in the East and you see this guy three or four times, then maybe you can come up with a little better game plan on how you want to deal with him."

So far, the East has fared no better, which is why Dickey is a lock to head to Kansas City next month -- and why Collins has been kicking around the idea of squeezing an extra start out of him on short rest before the break. That seems unlikely to happen at this point, with the manager wary of messing with Johan Santana's schedule. But it nonetheless speaks to how important Dickey has become to this rotation.

And if he starts for the NL in his first All-Star Game at age 37, it will only add validation to the league's most perplexing pitch.

"Just getting to the All-Star Game would be fantastic," Dickey said. "Obviously it would be a tremendous honor, and I think it would give a real legitimacy to the knuckleball. A lot of people think the knuckleball is a gimmick. I like to try to prove that it's much more than that."

Former Notre Dame assistant Corwin Brown enters guilty plea

In a plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop a class B felony confinement charge against Brown in the August 2011 incident at his home in Granger, just northeast of South Bend. With his house surrounded by police, Brown eventually released his wife, Melissa, then shot himself in the stomach.

Brown, 42, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to class D felony confinement and domestic battery charges.

His family says they believe he sustained brain trauma while playing as a defensive back at college in Michigan and during his eight seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Detroit Lions.

Corwin and Melissa Brown were at the courthouse Thursday morning, but they both declined to comment on the deal. Sentencing is set for Aug. 21.

The plea agreement recommends a four-year prison sentence but also states that prosecutors would not oppose a suspended sentence with Brown placed on probation.

"The state won't object to the probation, but it is ultimately my decision," St. Joseph County Judge Jane Woodward Miller said. She told Brown he could face up to six years behind bars.

The agreement also calls for Brown to pay $4,471 in restitution to the St. Joseph County police department and $3,763 to the Mishawaka police department.

Miller reiterated that a psychiatrist and a psychologist were divided on whether Brown had been mentally competent at the time of the standoff. She said they weren't asked about his competency to stand trial. Miller has ordered those doctors' reports sealed.

Brown, wearing a blue shirt, dark blue pants and a white coat, told Miller during questioning that he was under a doctor's care in Chicago and was taking medications for psychosis. He said he couldn't recall which types of medications he was on. He said he was able to understand what was going on and that the medications weren't clouding his judgment.

Under questioning from defense attorney Mike Tuszynski, Brown said he couldn't recall everything that happened during the standoff and that he had not kept his wife confined in the house, forcing a brief suspension of the proceedings.

Brown and Tuszynski consulted privately, then the former coach returned to the courtroom and said he pushed his wife inside the house after she called the police. He said he tried to pull her upstairs and that this caused her discomfort or pain.

"At some point she was blocking the door and your arm made contact with her head?" Tuszynski asked.

"Yes," Brown replied.

He said their two children were present during the incident.

Giants ride shutout streak to top of NL West

Matt Cain, it's your turn.

"Don't worry about it," Madison Bumgarner told him Thursday night. "There's no pressure."

Pause.

"All you've got to do is throw a shutout."

These guys are such kidders.

After all, Cain had a perfect game earlier this season. He's the ace of the staff, one of the best in the business. On the other hand, what have you done for us lately, Matt?

It's going to be such a downer when the Giants allow a run, and that, absolutely, positively is going to happen. Brace yourselves, Giants fans.

It has happened before. Not that long ago, really. As a matter of fact, the Giants gave one up last Sunday. It happened in the ninth inning of a game against the A's.

If we'd known it was going to be the last one for a while, we could have marked the occasion. Home plate could be on display in Cooperstown by now.

But since then, the Giants haven't allowed a single one. They shut out the Dodgers in three straight games, and then Madison Bumgarner kept it going with a brilliant one-hit shutout of the Reds Thursday night.

Reds' catcher Ryan Hanigan got the only hit, a leadoff single in the sixth inning. When Bumgarner was done, he'd extended the shutout streak to 36 innings, the longest streak in the 130 seasons the Giants have been doing business.

In 36 innings, the Giants have allowed all of 17 hits, with 10 walks and 28 strikeouts. It began with Barry Zito going seven innings and getting finishing work from a pair of relievers against the Dodgers on Monday.

Ryan Vogelsong matched Zito with seven shutout innings on Tuesday, and was also followed by two relievers. And then Tim Lincecum went seven on Wednesday before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

Bumgarner got the ball on Thursday and was very nearly perfect.

"Amazing," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Indeed.

Now it's Matt Cain going against the Reds tonight at AT&T Park.

Oh, there's that whole thing with the standings as well. When the Giants left Oakland on Sunday, they were in second place, three games out of first.

This morning, they're alone atop the National League West, a game in front of the Dodgers.

There's so much right going on with these Giants. Though the team was offensively challenged for much of this season, Bochy has found a nice combination in the middle of the lineup.

Hats off to general manager Brian Sabean for the Melky Cabrera deal. The outfielder has been terrific from start to finish. Pablo Sandoval has been solid again, and Brandon Belt has been the guy the Giants projected him to be.

And even with closer Brian Wilson gone for the season, the Giants' bullpen has been plenty reliable.

But these Giants are about the starting rotation. That was true when they won the World Series in 2010, and it's why plenty of people thought they might go back this season.

It was supposed to begin with Lincecum, Cain and Vogelsong, in that order. But until this week, Lincecum's season has been a long-running nightmare.

His velocity was down, his command off. He'd won one time and had an ERA over six. For a guy who'd won Cy Young Awards in his first two full seasons, it just didn't seem possible he was having such struggles.

He kept fighting through it, working on mechanics, conditioning, you name it. The Giants toyed with giving him a start off, and this week, Lincecum made that decision look like a good one.

Likewise, Zito has gone through tough times the last few years. He, too, appears to be fixed. To have all of them pitching at a high level isn't a fair fight.

This was the Giants team that Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers feared when he acquired Trevor Cahill and Jason Kubel last winter. The Giants had an off year in 2011, and Towers looked at all that pitching and didn't think they'd have another one.

It was easy to project a great Diamondbacks-Giants race in the division this summer, but the Dodgers sprinted out of the gate and looked like the best team in baseball for a few weeks.

There's no way of knowing how it'll unfold in the weeks ahead. All that's for sure is that the Giants made a statement this week.

To quote former Dodgers manager Joe Torre, "It's all about the pitching. It's always about the pitching."

If that's the case, this summer may be all about the Giants. We resume the streak at 36 innings tonight at AT&T Park.

Irish AD: Playoff panel should emphasize SOS

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Wednesday that he expected college football's four-team playoff selection committee to put an emphasis on strength of schedule and be able to analyze every FBS team's season.

Swarbrick said the details of the committee have yet to be determined, but there have been some parameters established.

"We want it to be big enough so that every football team, all 121 FBS schools, are viewed," Swarbrick said on "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on ESPN 1000. "There's somebody who's actually spent the time having watched some games and understand them.

"We want the sort of sophisticated analysis that says you know this team lost their first game, but their quarterback didn't play the last three quarters. The rest of their season they were undefeated, so if you factor that in, maybe they're a top-four team in the country. We want to have that level of sophistication."

Much like the NCAA basketball tournament's selection committee, Swarbrick expected the football one to value a team's strength of schedule, especially its nonconference one.

"One of the things we like so much about that is as much as this happened in basketball in the past decade, the selection committee will send a real message about strength of schedule," Swarbrick said. "If you choose not to challenge yourself, especially in the pre-conference games, it's going to impact your rating. That's another way we think we're contributing to the vibrancy of the regular season through this process."

Swarbrick said he thought the committee could consist of 12-15 members.

"I think we'll probably have a model where each conference has a representative and then there are a group of the independent people who have no affiliation but who are clearly identified as football knowledgeable," Swarbrick said.

Swarbrick also reiterated there were no plans to make an eight-team playoff before the contract for the four-team one ends in 2025.

"We really do not view this as a step," Swarbrick said. "The things that led us to this conclusion are things that aren't going to change. For example, we didn't want any game preparation or games occurring before first semester ended, and we didn't want any games being played after second semester started, so that limits the calendar.

"With all we're all learning about concussions and player safety, we didn't want to add another round of games even if we had time on the calendar. And most importantly, what we see all the time in any collegiate sports is sort of bigger and broader the postseason the harder it is to maintain a really vibrant regular season, and college football has the best regular season in the world. One of the reasons we're going with a 12-year deal with all the elements of this is we don't plan on even considering a change during that 12-year period."

Swarbrick also thought Chicago's Soldier Field could be a destination for the championship game. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said last month Chicago could be considered for a future Super Bowl.

"Absolutely, Chicago could," Swarbrick said. "That's one of the things we're most excited about -- the championship game is going to be bid out like the Super Bowl is. Indianapolis just had a great experience last year hosting. New York is going to host the Super Bowl this year. We want to take college football to those places, too. The championship game can be anywhere."

Sporting News: Vilma plans suspension injunction

Jonathan Vilma is not giving up his 2012 season without a big fight.

Vilma?s lawyers have informed federal Judge Helen G. Berrigan that Vilma will file an injunction in her court if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell does not rescind Vilma's suspension, New Orleans television station WWL reports.

Goodell suspended Vilma for the coming season for his part in the Saints? bounty scandal. Vilma has denied any involvement.

The veteran linebacker has since walked out of an appeal hearing, calling the process over which Goodell presided a ?sham.?

Vilma has also filed a defamation claim against Goodell in federal court in New Orleans; Berrigan has been assigned to that case. Vilma's lawyers say the injunction is a related matter.

If Berrigan grants the injunction, Vilma could play until the courts resolve the litigation.

More running, less Freeman (in more ways than one) is Bucanneers' plan

Even in the offseason workouts, the Tampa Bay Bucs saw much less of quarterback Josh Freeman in the spring. Somewhat curiously, given the fourth-year veteran's considerable profile with the franchise, that might actually be a good thing, Freeman and the first-year Tampa Bay coaching staff agree.

One of the elements of the Bucs' spring minicamps and OTAs, a component that was elevated to national security status levels, was pegging exactly how many pounds the former first-rounder (2009) has dropped since the end of last season. Far less guarded was the reality that, in the offensive blueprint preferred by rookie coach Greg Schiano and coordinator Mike Sullivan, there figures to be less weight placed on the quarterback.

"The running game," Freeman acknowledged, "is going to be a big key for us."

No one who sat and listened to Schiano's spiel at the league meetings three months ago, or who has checked in regularly with Tampa Bay officials and coaches since the former Rutgers boss began implementing his philosophy, will be surprised by that. The top man has mandated a more physical team. It's a level that shouldn't be too difficult to achieve given the Bucs' lack of muscle during a four-win 2011 campaign, and that could fuel a bounce-back year for Freeman as well as the team.

Every season, of course, the league has a healthy contingent of potential comeback players, and 2012 is no different. But in assessing the players with the kinds of skills that might lend themselves to a return to prominence, Freeman would have to be at or near the top of the list. His skills-set is about as imposing as his great size.

"[Physically], Josh has still got it all," one Tampa Bay assistant said last week.

No doubt, it's still very much a quarterback league, and the Bucs play in one of the most quarterback-driven divisions in the NFL, with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton around. But the Bucs, who slumped from 10 wins in 2010 to a dozen losses last season, ran the ball fewer times than any team (346 attempts) in '11. That might help explain their No. 30 statistical rating in rushing offense, and the paucity of runs could be explained in part by early deficits in most games, but a trickle-down effect as the, well, trickle down of Freeman's performance.

Regarded as one of the NFL's rising stars, and with some Tampa Bay officials privately insisting only a year ago that they would not trade Freeman for any player in the league, his touchdown passes fell from 25 to 16 and his interceptions rose from six to 22. Freeman posted a better completion percentage than the previous season, and had more passing yards, but his quarterback rating fell by more than 20 points.

One of the league's biggest quarterbacks from a physical dimension standpoint, Freeman was also one of the biggest flops in the NFL in 2011. But if the Bucs are to compete for an unlikely playoff spot, they desperately need Freeman to rebound. And Freeman, who won't turn 25 until a week after the regular seasons ends, needs some help, which the new Bucs' staff apparently plans to give their talented quarterback.

"He can't do it all himself; nobody can," Schiano said this spring.

In fact, Schiano and Co. have started surrounding Freeman with an improved arsenal, with upgraded personnel and the previously noted schematic change, to assure that the quarterback won't have to be a one-man band.

The addition of wideout Vincent Jackson in free agency should afford Freeman a big, productive target. Tight end Dallas Clark isn't the player he was three years ago, but he figures to be a dependable mid-range option. Third-year veteran Mike Williams has demonstrated more discipline that he did a year ago, when his standout play from his 2010 rookie campaign seemingly went to his head. Getting guard Carl Nicks in free agency will upgrade the line. The surprising pick of tailback Doug Martin late in the first round adds versatility and flexibility to the running game, and it puts starter LeGarrette Blount on notice that his fumbles won't be tolerated.

And, of course, there is Freeman, whose work ethic is exemplary, who wants to be good, and who is more than ready to shoulder his share of the blame for 2011.

"The important thing," said Freeman who has logged 40 starts the past three years, "is to learn from everything. Not so much to dwell on it, but to use it to your advantage, and that's what I'm trying to do. You know, make everything a lesson."

For the Bucs and Freeman, the most important lesson for 2012 might be this hackneyed but critical one: Less is more.

Video: Is Mike Trout's grab catch of the year?

Los Angeles Angels rookie Mike Trout continues to make spectacular plays in the outfield.

He may have made the catch of the year robbing the Baltimore Orioles' J.J. Hardy of a home run in the bottom of the first inning of Wednesday's game at Camden Yards.

Trout, in a full-out sprint, made a leaping grab at the center field wall to the appreciation of pitcher Jered Weaver. Trout was in full extension when he made the catch well above the fence.

"One of the best plays I have seen behind me," Weaver said. "Obviously very uplifting, and I played off of that. The offense did the rest."

"Now that is Torii Hunter, circa 2002 against Barry Bonds in the All-Star Game," said Angels broadcaster Victor Rojas.

BOX SCORE: Angels 13, Orioles 1

Trout was playing in front of a large throng of friends and relatives who made the trip from his hometown of Millville, N.J.

His catch certainly impressed Hardy, an eight-year major league veteran.

"To me, that's the best," Hardy told reporters after the Angels' 13-1 victory. "For sure, that's probably the best play I've seen against me. Maybe the best I've seen against anyone else, too. Pretty good."

Hardy's teammate, Adam Jones, may very well get shut out of Gold Glove awards in coming years thanks to Trout. Jones extended some props via Twitter:

This kid @Trouty20 is a freak of nature. I'm just saying.

The 20-year old is flashing leather like his teammate Hunter, who has won nine Gold Glove Awards roaming center field. Hunter, 36, now has the best seat in the house in right field to watch the youngster.

Trout has turned heads since he was called up in April. He is making a case to make the All-Star Game in Kansas City in two weeks. He's hitting .344 and leads the American League with 21 stolen bases. Oh, and he had another four hits Wednesday night, too.

Sullinger continues to slide in Mock Draft 4.0

Sources said the Kings aren't as content as I'd previously thought about the idea of grabbing whichever player falls between Kidd-Gilchrist and Barnes (assuming Beal is gone and Robinson, with whom they'd likely be thrilled, is off the board as well). As discussed back in Mock 2.0, I'm now hearing once again that they may go big in an attempt to find a complement for young center DeMarcus Cousins. I still put Barnes here because he's the value pick who could be dealt to another team as part of a trade in which the Kings move back to select a big man. Sources said one of the possibilities is to swap picks with Golden State (No. 7) and pick up another asset. And, of course, Houston lurks as a possible partner in trading back.

As for which big man they'd opt for? That's not clear yet, though I'm told it wouldn't be Connecticut center Andre Drummond. Some of the candidates include North Carolina power forward John Henson, Kentucky power forward Terrence Jones, and, depending on how far back they went, Mississippi State power forward Arnett Moultrie. St. John's small forward Moe Harkless, who is expected to go in the mid-to-late first round, had a surprise workout in Sacramento on Monday.

Replay gives LoMo his first pinch-hit homer

MIAMI -- Logan Morrison took a few minutes to circle the bases on his first career pinch-hit home run.

The delay was attributed to the shot being subjected to an overturned replay review in the seventh inning of the Marlins' 5-3 win over the Cardinals at Marlins Park.

In the seventh inning on Wednesday, Morrison ripped a liner to right field off left-hander Sam Freeman. The ball bounced off the top of the padding on the wall, struck a railing and came back onto the field.

Initially, Morrison held up for a double, as no home run ruling was called.

"I thought it was out," Morrison said.

Morrison said he was scared when he saw third-base coach Joe Espada pointing to return to second base.

"I was like, 'I might get thrown out here,'" Morrison said. "I thought I hit it out. ... I knew I got it well, but at this park, you never know, with the high fence and everything else."

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen asked crew chief Jerry Layne for a review. The umpires huddled, and headed off the field to check the review.

After a short delay, the umpires returned to the field and determined the ball was indeed a home run. The run became the game-winner for Miami.

From the dugout, Guillen saw the ball clear the wall, and he was confident the double would be overturned.

"Yeah, I know," Guillen said. "As soon as he hit it, I knew that ball hit the back of the rail. Thank God, we have instant replay, because now it was going to be a double. That helped a lot. It also helps the umpires."

That's quicker than arguing for three hours.

Morrison's home run was his eighth off the season.

The Marlins hit back-to-back homers in the inning. John Buck went deep off Fernando Salas. The Cardinals made a pitching change, and used the left-handed Freeman for Morrison.

It was the second review ever at Marlins Park.

On June 7, Giancarlo Stanton had a home run declared by replay on a drive also to right field.

Houston makes another deal, still eyeing Howard

NEW YORK -- The Houston Rockets are continuing their efforts to put together a package of first-round draft picks in hopes of moving up in the round to get highly sought center Andre Drummond out of Connecticut or even swing a deal with the Orlando Magic to get center Dwight Howard.

The Rockets on Wednesday sent center Samuel Dalembert and the 14th pick in the first round to the Milwaukee Bucks for the 12th pick in the first round, guard Shaun Livingston and forwards Jon Brockman and Jon Leuer, according to two people with knowledge of the trade who requested anonymity until the deal becomes official.

That leaves the Rockets with the 12th, 16th and 18th picks of the first round.

In the latest USA TODAY Sports/Hoopsworld.com mock draft of the first round, Steve Kyler has Drummond falling from the No. 6 pick to No. 10 and going to the New Orleans Hornets.

Federer advances to 3rd round at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England -- Roger Federer gave Prince Charles a bow, then gave Fabio Fognini a royal thumping.

With the Prince of Wales visiting Wimbledon for the first time since 1970, Federer was at his best Wednesday and beat Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Six-time champion Federer won 37 of 41 points on his first serve, and won 21 of 23 points at the net against Fognini, an Italian ranked 68th.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall sat in the first row of the Royal Box as Federer walked onto Centre Court for the day's first match. Federer and Fognini stood side by side as they bowed awkwardly toward the royals, and Charles responded with a wave and grin.

"They do brief you beforehand," Federer said. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do. We're thrilled for the tennis family that they came to watch Wimbledon today."

When Federer completed his victory, Charles and Camilla joined the crowd's applause.

Seeded third, Federer hopes to end his 2-year drought in major tournaments, and he's off to a good start, losing only nine games through two rounds. He seeks to add to his record total of 16 Grand Slam championships, and he could match the record of seven Wimbledon men's titles set by William Renshaw in the 1880s and tied by Pete Sampras in 2000.

"I'm just happy overall with how I'm playing," Federer said. "I'm serving well when I have to. I'm moving well. I feel like my forehand and backhand are working well. All of a sudden you win quite comfortably, but you have to focus until the very last point, and I'm happy as well with my concentration level."

Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick reached the second round by wrapping up a rain-delayed 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-5 victory over 186th-ranked British wild-card entry Jamie Baker on Wednesday.

The 30th-seeded Roddick, whose title at the 2003 U.S. Open was the last for an American man at any Grand Slam tournament, and Baker were forced off court by wet weather in the second set Tuesday night. Then the resumption of their match was pushed back by a rain delay Wednesday.

Roddick broke Baker for a 6-5 lead in the final set, then served out the match, closing it with a 127 mph ace, his 14th.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

U.S.-UK security experts unite for London Olympics

LONDON (AP) -- Fighter jets thunder above the English countryside. Missiles stand ready. And Big Brother is watching like never before.

The London Olympics are no ordinary games. Not since World War II have Britain and the United States teamed up for such a massive security operation on British soil.

Hundreds of American intelligence, security and law enforcement officials are flying across the Atlantic for the games that begin July 27. Some will even be embedded with their British counterparts, sharing critical intelligence and troubleshooting potential risks. Dozens of Interpol officers will also be deployed.

The unique collaboration is rooted in common threats the partners have faced since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S. and Britain's own deadly suicide bombings in 2005.

Britain was America's closest ally in Afghanistan and Iraq, making it a prime target of Islamic terror groups. And dozens of recent terror plots, including the 2006 plot to blow up nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners, have been hatched within Britain's sizeable Muslim population, more than 1 million of whom have ties to Pakistan.

Although other Olympics have taken place since 9/11 - Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin, Beijing and Vancouver - London poses a different breed of security challenge.

"I'm confident that there is more than adequate security here for these games," Louis Susman, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. told The Associated Press. "That said, we live in a tumultuous world, whether that be in New York or London."

Intelligence officials say there has been an expected increase in chatter among extremist groups but there are still no specific or credible threats to the London games. The terror level is labeled substantial, a notch below severe and what it has been for much of the past decade. A substantial threat level indicates that an attack is a strong possibility.

"There is a perception in some quarters that the terrorist threat to this country has evaporated," said Jonathan Evans, head of Britain's domestic spy agency of MI5. "Bin Laden is dead, al-Qaida's senior leadership in Pakistan is under serious pressure and there hasn't been a major terror attack here for seven years. (But) in back rooms and in cars and on the streets of this country, there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here."

The potential threats to the London games are broad and diverse - a lone wolf attacker such as Norway's Anders Behring Breivik who confessed to killing 77 people; a possible non-Asian Muslim convert who could slip by security with a European passport; a coordinated strike like the Sept. 11 terror attacks or a debilitating cyber-attack.

Although al-Qaida has been weakened by targeted U.S. strikes, its affiliates in places like Somalia and Yemen have stepped up their activity and increased their capabilities. They've even been working on bombs that can go undetected in airport scans.

British security officials fear that dozens of nationals who went to train in Somalia and elsewhere could eventually return.

"Terrorist problems have a long tail," said Evans. "They very rarely just stop."

Up to 1 million visitors are expected for the games, putting added strain on border security agents at airports like London's Heathrow, which has been criticized for its long queues and lack of staff to screen those arriving from other countries.

On site, some 300,000 people are expected to flow into Olympic Park in east London each day during peak times.

One of the key functions for Interpol, the international police organization, will be to speed intelligence data sharing between countries so threats can be deterred. U.K. officials scan Interpol data 130 million times per year, Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble told the AP during an exclusive interview at the agency's Lyon headquarters.

"The truth is, and we know this from Norway, that you can't identify one ethnic group and say that's the ethnic group that should only concern us," Noble said. "But this Olympics - from all that I know and based on all the information that Interpol has - should be a safe Olympics."

Shared intelligence, better technology and boosted resources have allowed security officials to crack organized plots before they happen but the possibility of a self-starter extremist who operates below the radar remains one of the biggest fears.

In the case of Breivik, there were few warning signals that the self-styled anti-Muslim fanatic was about to kill 77 people last summer. The same essentially was true for Mohamed Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent who in March killed three paratroopers, a rabbi and three Jewish school children in southwest France.

Security officials say unless people are already known to authorities, they can go virtually undetected as they plan atrocities.

The overall security numbers are staggering. The games will be protected by some 12,000 police officers during peak times and 23,700 security staff - a number that includes some 13,500 troops on standby, which is more than the 9,500 British troops currently in Afghanistan. A no-fly zone will also be established over Olympic venues from July 14 to August 15.

More than 100,000 people have applied for jobs at Olympics venues, being vetted for employment history and possible criminal backgrounds. The more rigorous checks are done by the government for accreditation to get into the games, according to Ian Horseman Sewell with G4S, a global company providing most of the training and security staff for the Olympics.

Still, Sewell admits London is different than past games.

"London is a proven terrorist target and it is the first time the summer Olympics have been operated in a post 7/7 environment in a place that isn't a totalitarian state," Sewell said, referring to the 2005 suicide bombings in London and the 2008 Beijing games. "From a security perspective, London is breaking new ground."

G4S will also help secure venues outside of the park and protect athletes.

Some specific teams from places like Belarus, Belgium, New Zealand and Vietnam will be training in northern France to keep costs down - a move that prompted a joint Franco-British security exercise earlier this year to test preparedness.

Protecting athletes has been a concern since a terror attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

"Israeli athletes will be staying away from the others in a more secluded area and with more security," a senior Israeli intelligence official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his job. "But a repetition of what happened in Munich is considered unlikely because Israel is ready and also because it isn't the kind of attack Palestinians would want now."

Technology has also advanced from past games.

Special Israeli surveillance technology has been rolled out for the Olympics across Britain, a country already known for its 4 million closed-circuit television cameras. Even more cameras have been installed at the Olympic Park.

Advanced facial and image recognition software will be used to identify suspects and connect multiple crime scenes. Cameras will be used to capture suspicious behavior. And special drones will be used for crowd surveillance, according to a salesman at an Israeli company who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

And remember the movie "Speed" where a bomb would allegedly go off if a bus went slower than 50 mph (80 kph)? Hundreds of public transport vehicles and VIP buses being used in the London games have already been equipped so authorities can tell if a driver is acting erratically - something that might happen in a hijacking.

Authorities will also be able to stop a vehicle remotely or keep it going at a certain speed - technology that could be useful if a terrorist were carrying explosives and threatening to crash a bus full of athletes into a crowded venue.

The British military has already made headlines with the weapons it will have available - surface-to-air missiles, RAF Typhoon combat aircraft and an aircraft carrier docked on the Thames, the river that cuts across London close to several Olympic sites.

Security officials had worried that Irish dissidents could target the games, but those fears have dissipated.

Despite the U.S.-U.K. collaboration, there will still be differences in how the London Olympics is policed. Most of the security personnel will be unarmed - a striking difference to operations in the United States.

Adding to security issues, leaders from around the world will want to visit during the Olympics. The American delegation will be led by first lady Michelle Obama while President Barack Obama focuses on his re-election campaign.

"I've not heard any American who has said they were concerned about security here," said Susman, the ambassador. "London has made an effort to showcase London for the world and I think it's going to be terrific."

NFL players union asks league to investigate protracted Brees negotiations

As Drew Brees engaged in a media blitz Tuesday, bringing awareness to concussion-related issues and being asked obligatory questions about his contract status and the ongoing Saints "bounty" investigation, the NFLPA was continuing a more private inquiry of its own into such matters.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the NFLPA recently submitted a letter to commissioner Roger Goodell regarding Brees' contract impasse with New Orleans, asking the league to launch a probe into whether the Saints were acting in good faith in negotiations with the star quarterback. Some within the NFLPA believe that Brees' work on behalf of the union last year, as one of the name plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the league during the lockout, might be held against him as the sides remain unable to work out a long-term deal. (The NFLPA is also closely monitoring the lack of negotiations with the Saints' draft picks -- they are the only team yet to sign a single selection -- in regards to possible action, as well).

Brees has yet to sign his one-year franchise tender, worth roughly $16.4 million, and has shown no indication of doing so, though he did confirm publicly Tuesday he would not sit out the season. The team and the player have made some incremental progress, though many in league circles are surprised the issue has lingered as long as it has, with Brees skipping all of the offseason work, as is the case in virtually all of these situations regarding players yet to sign their franchise tender. The sides have until July 16 to work out a long-term deal, and, should the NFL not launch an investigation into the union's claims regarding Brees' negotiations, then the NFLPA is prepared to file an unfair-labor practices claim with the National Labor Relations Board, the sources said.

The NFL declined to comment for this story. The Saints declined public comment as well, though a team source discounted the veracity of the contents of the letter.

The NFLPA opted to pursue this matter with Goodell on its own, and was not probed by Brees. The quarterback did not play a role in the decision, sources said, with the union moving forward of its own accord. NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith would not discuss the specifics of the matter but said the union was acting as it would to protect any member and that Brees did not have a say in any of the actions the union might take.

According to sources, the NFLPA is asking the league to investigate possible negative comments members of the Saints management or ownership might have made regarding Brees' involvement in union matters during the lockout. In the letter to the NFL, sources said the NFLPA cites CBA provision, Article 49, Section 1: "No Discrimination: There shall be no discrimination in any form against any player by the NFL, the Management Council, any Club or by the NFLPA because of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or activity or lack of activity on behalf of the NFLPA."

In the letter, the NFLPA asks the NFL to respond in a timely manner. If the union does not believe the matter is being taken seriously, then making a claim to the NLRB would be the next step.

Brees was very vocal during the lockout, and he was one of a contingent of players involved in negotiations who were fighting against the franchise tag. The union wanted the tags eliminated at one point, or at least players being limited to being tagged only once in his career. However, the new CBA not only does not include those restrictions, but the adjustments in the calculations of the franchise figures resulted in the tags falling dramatically in 2012, making it easier for the Saints to afford Brees (while his bloated cap figure counts against them, the team has not had to give him any upfront money, and if Brees played under the franchise tag, that salary would be paid out over the 17 regular-season game checks).

It is indeed strange that the situation has come to this, as Brees became the savior of Bayou football post-Katrina, and the love affair between player and city and team was robust, culminating in a Lombardi Trophy only a few years ago. But the business side of the football has a way of intervening, particularly when you are talking about what has the potential to be the biggest deal in NFL history.

While contract-demand figures reported in the past -- with Brees then said to be seeking $23 million per season -- struck me as inflated, the magic number has always been about $20 million per season, and I suspect he ends up right around that mark (maybe 19.5/year). Figuring out how much money is paid out in the first three years, how much is fully guaranteed, and what that fully guaranteed figure is (somewhere around $55 million to $60 million, I suspect) is where the real work remains to be done on the contract.

Brees, making the rounds on morning shows Tuesday, expressed surprised that the talks have dragged on this long, and he made it clear having to play out one year on the franchise tag is not his cup of tea. "I've played under the franchise tag before," he told ESPN's Mike and Mike. "That did not end well for me." (The NFL and NFLPA have a hearing Wednesday to clarify what Brees' hypothetical 2013 franchise tag would be, with the NFLPA contending it should be a 140 percent raise as a third-time franchise designee, and the NFL maintaining it should be 120 percent).

Brees also continued to take issue with the NFL's investigation into the bounties during his media tour, and few players have been as outspoken on this issue on Twitter and otherwise. He has challenged Goodell directly on the matter with his remarks, asking for "proof" of money changing hands and attributing a lot of what has been reported or heard on audio tapes as "tough talk" that was not meant to be taken literally and was not done so by his teammates.

The standoff between the Saints and Brees is not the only New Orleans situation being monitored by the union.

New Orleans is the only team yet to sign a pick and, according to several sources with knowledge of the situation, Saints officials have yet to even enter into negotiations with their five selections, informing their agents that talks would likely begin in July. Obviously, that's not what any rookie, looking for his first NFL cash, wants to hear, and though it does not explicitly violate the CBA language, the union believes such a delay violates the spirit of the agreement and does not meet the threshold of "good-faith negotiations" as espoused by the CBA.

The new system was put in place to avoid protracted negotiations or holdouts and to get players signed quickly and with less drama. Indeed, there are only 37 unsigned draftees in the entire NFL as of Tuesday, and the Saints, despite not having a first- or second-round pick, accounted for five of them.

A Saints source pointed out that neither the NFL nor NFLPA has broached the matter with the team and that there are no rules on when talks must begin. Furthermore, the Saints, for years (except last year, which was unusual due to the lockout), have not begun negotiations until July and this is their common practice. The less money a player has in his pocket, the less he is prey for hangers-on and friends and family members looking for loans, cars, etc. And the less money in his pocket, the less likely he is to act recklessly during this dangerous, unsupervised period in the NFL calendar before camp, so the thinking goes. As an organization, the Saints have long thought that signing players early might not be of much benefit, and they also figure that they can get the entire class signed in the matter of a few days next month.

The Saints are the only team in the NFL yet to sign their seventh-round pick and are the only team without its sixth-round selections under contract, as well. The Saints and Raiders are the only teams yet to sign their fifth-round picks, and New Orleans is the only team with an unsigned fourth-round pick. Of the 37 unsigned picks, 32 of them came in the first three rounds; New Orleans made only one selection in those rounds.

Some have speculated perhaps the Saints are doing so to save money -- it's a theory some agents have put forth. However, New Orleans' rookie pool for 2012 is only $2.27 million (no picks in the top two rounds, remember), so while the team would be hypothetically earning interest on that money, it will eventually have to pay its draft class between May and before camp opens in late July, the lump sum by NFL standards is negligible.

It certainly makes the Saints "outliers" in their approach to negotiating with draft picks, as one agent put it -- most teams jumped in right away and got them signed ASAP -- but then again, in this of all offseasons, I suppose we would come to expect nothing less.
