Holland, who has started at designated hitter in both of Florida State's College World Series games, and his brother Steven Holland, 23, are suspected of changing the price tags on items in an attempt to purchase the goods for a lower amount, according to Omaha police.
Marty Conboy, the Omaha city prosecutor, said the incident took place at a vendor tent across the street from TD Ameritrade Park -- the site of the College World Series.
Conboy said the Hollands tried to switch the price tag on a shirt they wanted to buy, adding the difference in cost was $12.
Holland pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of damaging property during a court appearance Tuesday morning. He paid a $50 fine and the case is now closed, Conboy said.
"The young man in question, John Holland, made a serious error in judgment," Florida State coach Mike Martin said Tuesday afternoon in a statement released by the university.
"Due to a violation of team rules, he has been suspended indefinitely. The university will have no further comment on the situation."
Steven Holland, 23, who just completed his senior baseball season at Maryland, is John's older brother.
No. 3 national seed Florida State meets No. 2 UCLA in an elimination game Tuesday night.
Freshman John Nogowski, who had a pinch-hit single in the Seminoles' 12-2 elimination win over Stony Brook on Sunday, is expected to replace Holland in the lineup.
Holland, from Johns Creek, Ga., is hitting .243 this season.
He went 1 for 5 with a double and two RBIs in the Seminoles' 4-3 loss to Arizona in Friday's opener, and was 0 for 1 with two walks and two runs scored in the win over Stony Brook.
