Hood spent his freshman season at Mississippi State and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013-14.
"We are very happy to add Rodney to our program," Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski Krzyzewski said in a statement. "We recruited him out of high school and followed his progress at Mississippi State, where he had an outstanding year. We believe that with him sitting out a year and getting prepared he will have a huge positive impact on our program."
Hood is a left-handed wing who stands 6-foot-8 and averaged 10.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and two assists as one of the Southeastern Conference's top freshmen. Coach Rick Stansbury said in March that he was retiring, and a month later Hood announced his decision to leave the Bulldogs.
"I feel like Coach (Mike Krzyzewski) and the staff can get the most out of me as a player and academically," Hood told ESPN.com's Dave Telep. "I liked the teammates and felt like we have a good chance to compete for a championship. He was pretty honest with me and told me what he saw for my future. He was up front and he didn't just tell me anything. He was specific and to the point. He said he can make me a better basketball player and one of the best in the country. His track record speaks for itself. I could tell he believed in me as a player."
He becomes the fourth major college transfer to come to Duke since Krzyzewski took over the program in 1980, and the second in four years. Most recently, senior Seth Curry came to Duke in 2009 after one season at Liberty.
