Filed under: Jets, NFL Training CampAfter months of displeasure with his contract, All-Pro center Nick Mangold is reportedly close to signing a new, hefty deal with the Jets, according to multiple reports.
"It should be done any day now," a source close to Mangold told ESPN.
Mangold, due to make $3.3 million on the last year of his rookie contract, has been displeased about his contract situation for months. He even hinted at missing training camp until he ultimately decided to report and see how things would play out.
The deal was complicated by the 30 percent rule which states that in an uncapped year, a player's salary in an extension cannot increase by more than 30 percent of his previous year's salary. The Jets are somehow finagling a way around those restrictions.
Mangold will be the next member of the Jets' "Core Four" to get a contract extension. Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson signed a six-year, $60 million extension last month. Signing Mangold will further establish the Jets' offensive line, which was one of the tops in the league in 2009. Last season the Jets led the NFL in rushing.
