Nearly six months after the New Orleans Saints dispatched the Indianapolis Colts for the NFL championship, Obama hailed the Saints' win as a bright spot for a region that endured the horrors of Hurricane Katrina and a massive oil spill in recent years
"Plenty of cities carry sports teams through tough times," Obama said during the East Room ceremony packed with the team. "It's a rare team that carries a city through tough times."
Obama said the Saints, "took the hopes and dreams of a shattered city and placed it on its shoulders."
The ceremony had to be pushed back on the calendar due to multiple scheduing conflicts, but Politics Daily reported the the delays didn't dampen Obama's enthusiasm.
"I have a few staffers who were thrilled to have Drew [Brees] on their fantasy team," joked Obama, who was presented with a Saints jersey by Brees.
Obama, according to the The Times-Picayune, also chided Saints coach Sean Payton over his play-calling.
"I make some tough decisions every day, but I never decided on an onside kick in the second half of the Super Bowl," said the president, referencing Payton's call for an onside kick to begin the second half. "I'm glad that thing went all right."Michael Vick
