Atlanta Braves great and current broadcaster John Smoltz will have his No. 29 retired on-field in a pregame ceremony on June 8, the same day he'll also be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame during a luncheon.
The Braves have a 7:35 p.m. ET contest with the Blue Jays scheduled that day at Turner Field. Smoltz's uniform will be the ninth retired by the Braves, and he joins contemporaries Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, as well as his former manager, Bobby Cox.
"John has contributed so much to Atlanta Braves history," Braves president John Schuerholz said in a news release. "Inducting him into our Hall of Fame and making sure no one else will ever wear his No. 29 are the most meaningful and significant ways we can honor John."
Smoltz spent 20 seasons with the Braves after being drafted by Detroit in 1985. He came to the Atlanta organization in '87, and split his final big league season between the Red Sox and Cardinals in 2009.
Smoltz's career accomplishments include eight All-Star Games, the 1996 National League Cy Young Award and 15 postseason wins, which are second most all-time. He's also the lone pitcher to record 200 wins and 150 saves lifetime, and his 199 career strikeouts in the playoffs are a record. Smoltz's final tallies with the Braves: 210-147, 3,011 strikeouts and a 3.26 ERA in 706 games, 466 starts.
Ticket information for the Hall of Fame induction luncheon, to be held at the Omni Hotel adjacent to the CNN Center, is available at (404) 614-2310.
