Did play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle call out analyst partner Mike Fratello on the air? Or was he kidding around?
During the YES Network's telecast of the New Jersey Nets-Boston Celtics game Saturday night, there was an awkward but fascinating moment in which Eagle seemed to confront Fratello for taking a "patronizing tone" with him on the air.
"It was uncalled for," said Eagle. Fratello countered his partner was being "overly" sensitive. "Did you have a bad day today?" he asked.
Eagle had a "whiny meltdown," says Deadspin. Eagle may have thought Fratello patronized him earlier with his lecture on slip screens, says Awful Announcing.
The duo often banter back and forth on the air. So they may have been kidding to keep other entertained during another losing Nets season. Then again, on-air-TV talent can be thin-skinned. It does sound as Eagle himself says that he's "had enough" of Fratello.
YES spokesman Eric Handler called it "much ado about nothing" Monday morning. Says Handler: "Anyone who watches our Nets telecasts on a regular basis knows that Ian and Mike have a long history of this type of deadpan humor. This was all good-natured kidding."
