The Chargers coach could have lauded the way his team fought back against the Patriots in the second half after it looked as if it was finished and fell one missed field goal short of forcing an improbable overtime. He could have made his postgame news conference about how well his defense played the whole game and the way his offense roared to life in the fourth quarter.
But he didn't. Turner chose instead to talk about the first half, and an avalanche of dumb mistakes that doomed the Chargers to a third straight loss, falling 23-20 to New England.
"I just don't think we gave ourselves a chance in this football game," Turner said. "You do the things we did in the first half with the football, it's tough, and you're not going to win very many games."
When this game was over, the number of players in the Chargers' locker room who had explaining to do was mind-boggling. People say the Cowboys kill themselves with dumb mistakes and penalties, and they're right. But these Chargers make the Cowboys look like a team of West Point cadets on graduation day.

The Chargers out-gained the Patriots 363 yards to 179. They held a time-of-possession advantage of nearly 10 minutes. Their defense held Tom Brady to 159 passing yards, and not one Patriot rushed for as many as 25 yards. But thanks to six penalties and four turnovers, the Chargers -- who entered the game first in the NFL in offense and first in defense -- did just enough to lose and fall to 2-5.
