Filed under: Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, Patriots, NFL Injuries, NFL RefereesA weekend full of big (sometimes illegal) hits, and the injuries resulting from them, convinced the NFL it was time to take action against what it deems "devastating hits." It was announced Tuesday that the league would from now on be able to suspend players for any hit that crosses the line.
The player who dished out the most egregious hit of the lot, Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather, was rumored to be facing a potential suspension even before the rule was set to take effect, given the violent, unnecessary nature of his hit on Ravens tight end Todd Heap.
On Tuesday, the league reportedly has disciplined Meriweather and two other offenders with fines. No suspensions were given.
