Filed under: MLB Injuries, MLB RumorsMore and more attention is being paid to concussions in sports, and MLB may be joining the parade of professional leagues exercising caution. Sources tell the Associated Press that MLB is considering implementing a new, 7-day DL specifically for concussions.
The idea is being considered by a new concussion subcommittee under baseball's medical advisory committee. If the idea passes through the subcommittee, it would then go to Bud Selig and the players union for approval. If approved, the new DL could be implemented as early as next season.
This season, Minnesota's Justin Morneau suffered a concussion on July 7 and missed the remainder of the year with post-concussion syndrome. Former Giants catcher Mike Matheny was forced to retire in 2007 for the same reason. David Wright and Scott Rolen are other prominent MLB players to suffer concussions in recent seasons.
