Filed under: CyclingThe Tour de France 2011 route was announced early Tuesday morning, with 3,471 kilometers facing riders of the 98th edition of the race.
The mountainous course is thought to favor climbers, and features a tough finish through the Alps in the last week. The race includes six pure mountain stages including 23 categorized climbs, the same as last year, but also includes four mountain top finishes.
"This year we wanted a more balanced route, with three stages in the Pyrenees and three in the Alps during the last week," said race director Christian Prudhomme (pictured right unveiling the 2011 course).
"We will maintain suspense right up until the end."
