New Kim Clijsters Reshaping Career With Relentless US Open Win

Filed under: U.S. Open, WTANEW YORK -- Kim Clijsters is ruthless now. Determined. Focused. Relentless.

She's a bully, really.

Talk about rewriting your own story. Clijsters defended her U.S. Open title Saturday night, beating Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 in a match that redefined Clijsters yet again.

But a little cold honesty here: Great as Clijsters was, the night showed a real need for the Williams sisters. In fact, their absence overwhelmed the moment.

One thing, though, Clijsters was the only player who could win the title, and not have to suffer people saying it was only because Serena Williams, out with an injury, wasn't here. Afterall, Clijsters beat Williams here last year, and went on to win the Open.

"I'm happy I was capable of repeating history,'' Clijsters said.

Actually, she changed it. With each Open title, Clijsters becomes a different person. She used to be known as someone a little too nice and sweet to win big matches. Also, she was a choker. She finally won one U.S. Open, and that gave her some validation.

Then, she left the game, got married, had a baby. And she came back from a 2 1/2-year maternity leave as Super Mom, winning last year's Open.

On Saturday, she was simply a rock. Her movement was great, as always, but also she simply would not miss. She was precise, and perfectly happy to bury Zvonareva.
