Filed under: Heat, NBA Police BlotterProsecutors have dropped all marijuana charges against Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, noting there was not enough evidence to prove a case against him.
Haslem is relieved the situation is finally over. In a statement released by Haslem on Thursday night through the Heat, he stated, "I am really looking forward to getting back to basketball and focusing on the upcoming season."
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel first broke the news regarding the dismissal of Haslem's case.
Haslem's attorney, Eric Schwartzreich, received a call that the charges would be dropped on Thursday afternoon, he told The Associated Press.
"The State Attorney's Office will not be able to file charges," Assistant State Attorney Errol Portman wrote in what's known as a "no action" memo.
The 30-year-old Haslem was arrested on Aug. 15 after being pulled over for driving 78 mph in a 60 mph speed zone. When his 2008 Mercedes was searched, marijuana turned up. A passenger in Haslem's car, Antwan Fleming, claimed ownership of the marijuana when he was questioned by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Portman noted that Fleming's fingerprints were found on the container, not Haslem's. Therefore, it could not be proven that the marijuana was in Haslem's possession.
