Instant Replay a Hot Topic Again After Questionable Calls in Playoff Openers

Filed under: MLB Playoffs, MLB Umpires, American League Division SeriesST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It took one day of the postseason for umpiring and instant replay to again become an issue in baseball. And Rays manager Joe Maddon, who thought his team was robbed Wednesday on a key call in Game 1 of its Division Series, on Thursday predicted an imminent expansion of replay.

Said Maddon: "I do believe this: I believe it speaks to the point of the fact that you're going to see more discussion and eventually the implementation of more instant replay in our game.

"Those two plays yesterday, in particular, I think are going to speed up, expedite the discussion. I think you're going to see something in the near future, possibly even in the next season. I'm sure it's going to be well thought-out. I don't know exactly about the implementation, but I do believe that moment yesterday with thoughts of what happened to the Yankees yesterday kind of speaks to the point where we have to take advantage of technology in a little bit more detailed manner."
