PITTSBURGH -- Before Tuesday's game, the Nationals reinstated third baseman Ryan Zimmerman from the 15-day disabled list and placed outfielder Jayson Werth on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 7, with a left radius fracture.
Zimmerman was 13-for-58 (.224) with a home run and seven RBIs in 15 games for Washington before being placed on the DL on April 28 (retroactive to April 21) with right shoulder inflammation. The Nationals went 7-6 during Zimmerman's stint on the DL.
Werth, 32, was hitting .276 (27-for-98) with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 27 games for the Nationals before being injured while making a sliding catch in Sunday night's series finale against the Phillies.
The trip to the DL is Werth's first since 2008. He entered the season as one of just nine National Leaguers to play in at least 150 games in each of the previous three seasons.
Johnson slides Harper up to second in order
PITTSBURGH -- With Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman back in the lineup, manager Davey Johnson decided to bat Bryce Harper second in the batting order on Tuesday.
Johnson loves Harper's aggressiveness at the plate and wants a lefty presence near the top of the lineup. Infielder Steve Lombardozzi was hitting second and did a great job, both at the plate and at third base. But he is back on the bench because of Zimmerman's return.
"With Lombo out of the lineup, another guy that I like, Harper was a natural choice," Johnson said. "I also like a more left-handed presence in the lineup. He fits up there, too."
Harper said he needs to be patient at the plate hitting second, and look for a pitch up in the strike zone. Entering Tuesday's action against the Pirates, Harper was 8-for-26 (.308) with three RBIs and a stolen base.
"I'll try to be patient for Zimmerman and [Adam] LaRoche," Harper said. "I think having them back in the lineup is going to make us pretty strong, and make us better. I'm going to try to get on base for them and do some things for them. It's going to be very important."
Nationals ink lefty Gonzalez to Minors deal
PITTSBURGH -- The Nationals agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with left-hander Michael Gonzalez, the team announced. Gonzalez will report to the team's Spring Training complex in Viera, Fla., on Wednesday.
Last season, Gonzalez played for the Orioles and Rangers and had a combined 4.39 ERA in 56 games.
"He is a veteran relief pitcher who has experience as a closer and as a setup guy. We signed him to a Minor League contract," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "We want to improve our depth in the system. We want him to be an option if we need him."
Gonzalez, 33, is 17-21 with 74 holds, 56 saves and a 2.94 ERA in nine big league seasons with Orioles, Rangers, Braves and Pirates.
