A pro football player recently quit his job to become a firefighter. Luckily for the people of Hamilton, Ontario, it wasn't Albert Haynesworth.
The role model in our story is Sandy Beveridge. He doesn't have a lot in common with Haynesworth.
One is 6-foot-2 and 214 pounds. The other is 6-foot-6 and 350 pounds.
One would run into a burning building to rescue a stranger. The other would run into a burning building to rescue his paycheck.
One plays for the Washington Redskins. The other played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
They're in the little old CFL, where the league's entire payroll could fit comfortably inside Haynesworth's money clip. That made it necessary for Beveridge to switch careers. It didn't make it much easier.
"It's tough to leave the game you love," he said.

Beveridge was pulling down about $90,000 a year. A fine wage for a 28-year-old, but approximately 1/10th what Haynesworth makes per game.
