Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the Democratic congresswoman from Arizona who was shot in the head Saturday in Tucson, has been an active supporter of the state's professional and collegiate sports teams and is "one of the bright young lights in our political discourse," according to Leigh Steinberg, the long-time football agent and donor to Democratic candidates and causes. In recent years, Steinberg got to know Rep. Giffords because he made frequent trips to Tucson to visit his oldest son, who attended the University of Arizona. Giffords, who sits on the House Armed Forces Committee and whose husband Mark is a Navy pilot and a NASA astronaut, helped plan Steinberg's annual Super Bowl Party when the game was held in Glendale, Az., in 2008.
The event included a video link-up from the party to U.S -forces base in Iraq, and NFL luminaries such as Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith and former Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy spoke to the troops during the festivities. Giffords also wrangled then-Arizona governor Janet Napolitano, now the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, to make an appearance, and brought in a flight simulator for guests, according to Steinberg.
"She's a wonderful human being," said Steinberg, who for years was one of the NFL's leading agents, representing a stable of quarterbacks that included Troy Aikman, Steve Young and Warren Moon. "It's time we stop losing the best, brightest and most idealistic political leaders to gun violence."
