PITTSBURGH -- His is neither a feel-good story nor a look-good story. Ben Roethlisberger is as huggable as a porcupine, as graceful as a three-legged rhinoceros. He began this season on a four-game suspension for offseason behavior that was possibly criminal and certainly despicable, and because of which a large segment of the population will never see its way clear to cheering for him again. And even if you get past all of that, he's a tough watch. He leads the league in winces prompted, every play a high-wire improv act. He is in almost no way what you expect a star NFL quarterback to be.But he's also back in the Super Bowl. For the third time in his seven-year career.
"I don't care what the stats say or how it looks or any of that stuff," Steelers receiver Hines Ward said Sunday night, after Roethlisberger had helped engineer a 24-19 victory over the Jets in the AFC championship game. "As a quarterback, you're judged on wins and losses and getting to Super Bowls. And you can't knock Ben's record."
